Michael David Aafedt

Michael "Mick" Aafedt, age 81, of Minneapolis passed away on May 19, 2024, from Lewy Body Dementia. Mick knew how to love and to give generously, live compassionately, and with integrity. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He is remembered for his intellect, charm, quick wit, and his strong "blue eyes." Mick is survived by his loving wife, Deb Sundquist, his sons David (Katie) and Matt, and five grandchildren: Payton, Ryan, Fuzz, Reese, and Mac; sister-in-law Merilee Light; family Jody Aafedt; stepchildren, Britta (Andrew), Jack, Greta, and Kristin; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia "Pat" Aafedt, nee "Light," his brother, Leroy, and his parents, Art and Marguerite, as well as Pat's parents Ken and Amelia Light. Mick was born in Grand Forks, ND, and moved to Fargo where he graduated from Fargo Central High School. In 1961, he left North Dakota for St. Olaf College where he graduated with honors and met and fell in love with Pat. After graduating, Mick went to the University of Minnesota Law School while Pat's work as a teacher supported them. Mick was the youngest partner in the history of the 100-year plus law firm, and soon became the managing partner and president of the Minneapolis law firm of Aafedt, Forde, where he was a respected litigator and mediator in workers' compensation law. He was highly respected by both sides of the aisle while testifying at the Legislature, and in litigation, by both parties in the case caption. He was repeatedly recognized honored in America's Best Lawyers and Super Lawyers, both as a litigator and mediator. Mick was an unbelievably supportive parent and role model, not only for his two boys, but their countless friends who would often congregate at "the Aafedt's" on Lake Harriet. During these impromptu get-togethers in the Aafedt kitchen, den, or porch, he always attempted to provide little life lessons, usually when he sensed that his boys and friends were about to head out for a night on the town and do something unwise. He never missed a kids' sporting event, concert or other activity in which his boys or their friends participated, even if that meant that he had to work long hours well into the night. Mick and Pat were Minnesota Gopher Men's Basketball super fans and created a scholarship fund after Pat died in 2007. Mick married Deb in 2011 and together they had a happy marriage. Mick was a member and board member at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, a board member and volunteer at Southside Children's Center in Minneapolis, and member of the Minikahda Club. A special thanks to the staff and medical professionals at Open Circle and The Waters on 50th for the excellent care provided to Mick. Services will be held at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, 5025 Knox Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at 1:00 p.m., with a visitation at noon. A Reception will follow at Interlachen Country Club, 6200 Interlachen Blvd., Edina MN. Please wear a touch of blue to remember our Mickey Blue Eyes.
