Valerie Jean Wietzke

Wietzke, Valerie J. (Brask) Age 58, passed away Christmas Eve morning at the home she made with Mark, her husband of 23 years, and where she raised and loved and watched over her sons David and Zachary. Val was the beloved "Valentine's Day" daughter of Carl and Lorraine (Lenzen) Brask. Born and raised in Golden Valley, she graduated from Robbinsdale Armstrong High School in 1978. She worked for more than two-decades at US West Dex, and most recently at Banner Engineering. Val had a way of making a special connection with almost anyone she met. She was a listener and a talker, and she never seemed to tire of either. She had a laugh that cut through and across rooms (and she offered it up generously). When she smiled (as when she laughed), she leaned forward ever so slightly, as if being pulled into the joy, however silly or profound. She was the family shutterbug and loved her pictures, which she always printed so they could be held and passed around, not merely dismissed with a finger swipe. She showed her bond to family, friends, and community by showing upregularly accompanying, cheer-leading, and volunteering for the people, places, and things she loved and respected. Her flower garden was her art. She planned, tended, and shared it with intention, reverence, and wonder. It was beautiful as she was and as impermanent as we all are. Her passing marked the end of a 15-month journey of hope and struggle in the face of pancreatic cancer. Valerie is survived, mourned, and celebrated by her husband Mark; sons Zachary and David; mother, Lorraine (Lenzen) Brask; siblings, Terri Bevan, Cindy (Dick) Bowman, Pam (Paul) Havel, Lori (Rick) Neisess, Karen (Steve) Ottney-Kaste, Ron (Cindy) Brask; mother-in-law, Gloria (Katschke) Wietzke; in-laws, Sandra Hunten, Robert (Joan), Rev. Walter (Raija), Karol Matesi; and her many nieces, nephews, family and close friends. Valerie is preceded in death by her father, Carl Brask; "Auntie" Alice Brask; father-in-law, Rev. Dr. Walter Wietzke; and brother-in-law, Phil Ottney and other family members. A Celebration of Valerie's life will be held on Saturday 12pm at Faith-Lilac Way Lutheran Church (5530 42nd Ave N, Robbinsdale). Visitation at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel (5000 W 50th St), Friday 5-8pm and also one hour prior to church service. There will never be another you, Val. We will carry your memory in our hearts.
