Stephen Gotlieb Timothy Engels

It is with great sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Stephen Gottlieb Timothy Engels on April 18, 2026 at the age of 50 while traveling in Colombia. He is survived by his son Alex, his mother Lili Theresa, his siblings Bridget George (Ed), Luke, John (Christine), Clare Miller (John), Nicholas (Melanie), Andrew (Amanda), Paul (Kelli), and Elizabeth Morice (Nolan), his former wife, Olga; and many much-loved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Stephen Edmund Engels. Stephen was born November 13, 1975. He grew up in St. Cloud, MN, graduated from Technical High School in 1994, and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago. Steve was a continuous learner, with wide-ranging interests including language acquisition, technology, travel, and real estate. He pursued new opportunities and ideas. His interest in helping others through technology led him to his position as Chief Technology Officer at BetterAge Inc. Prior to that, he served as the President of Leviathan Group, pioneering decision support apps for the web. He also led the backend creation of BenefitsCheckUp.org for the National Council on Aging, a site that helped millions of seniors access public health benefits. Stephen started his career at the New York Stock Exchange. Steve was a wonderful father, kind friend, and great listener. His presence was not passive, but active, like the warmth of the sun. Every room he entered became brighter, and every party more fun. His wit was at times dry, always disarming. He loved adventurous travel, and followed all MN sports teams, especially the Twins. He treasured his time at the cabin fishing with Alex or enjoying contentious family golf games. He was never without a thoughtful gift or a corny joke for his many nieces and nephews. He leaves a profound absence in the lives of his family and friends. Visitation will be on May 28 at 9 am, followed by the funeral service at 10 am at Our Lady of Lourdes, 1 Lourdes Pl, Minneapolis. A reception will follow at noon at Midcity Gardens, 2412 West Valentine Ave, Saint Paul, 55108. Interment will be on May 29, 11 am at St. Francis Xavier Church, 25267 Redwing Ave, Shafer, MN 55074.
