Shirley Diane Larson Johnson: July 7, 1947 - August 3, 2026 Shirley Diane Larson Johnson, 79, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 3, 2026, in the loving home of her daughter, Rhonda, where she had been living since late April. During her final weeks, Shirley was cared for at home, surrounded by the love of her family and supported by the compassionate staff of Interim Hospice. Shirley was born on July 7, 1947, at Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Daniel Arvid Larson and Sophie Christine Person Larson. She grew up in North Minneapolis and graduated from North High School in 1965. Even as a young woman, Shirley had a talent for making life memorable. While still in high school, she worked as a carhop at the famous Sun Drive-In-a job she was immensely proud of and loved to talk about, especially when she could tell one of the many funny stories from her carhop days. After graduating from high school, Shirley attended Glamour Beauty Academy in Minneapolis, where she graduated at the top of her class and earned her full cosmetology license. She went on to have an accomplished career as a cosmetologist, working at Jackie Ann's in Minneapolis and later joining the staff of the prestigious Fontana Room, where she specialized in high-end hairstyling, cuts, and coloring. Shirley was exceptionally talented at what she did; she never really stopped being a cosmetologist. She continued to maintain her cosmetology license for many years after leaving the profession. She still did beautiful hair well into her 70s and even volunteered her talents to style the hair of women in local nursing homes. On April 18, 1970, Shirley married Charles Lawrence Johnson. The two had met on a blind date about a year before. Together they built a family and a life filled with love, laughter, faith, hard work, and community. When her husband's health was failing at the end of his life, she cared for him tirelessly until his last moments. Those who knew Shirley will remember that she was, quite simply, easy to love. Her personality was a little like a sparkling glass of pink champagne mixed with sunshine-and a warm, soft fleece blanket with a whimsical pattern that somehow made you smile just by looking at it. She was kind, intelligent, endlessly thoughtful, generous almost to a fault, and often outrageously funny. She had an extraordinary gift for making people feel loved and cared for. Shirley was always thinking about other people. She loved giving gifts, not because she needed an occasion, but because she saw something that reminded her of someone she loved. She noticed the good in people and made sure to call it out. She remembered things. She gave of herself freely. She was also a natural, if sometimes reluctant, leader. She served as president of the PTA at her eldest son's school and spent many years organizing and serving in her community alongside her husband. At her church, she volunteered for decades in ways both large and small-making blankets, serving church suppers, participating in and often leading her ladies' book club, teaching Sunday school for more than 20 years, and helping wherever she was needed. Her faith was not simply something she talked about; it was something she lived through service to others. In her adopted hometown of Grand Forks, Shirley seemed to know someone everywhere she went. She made friends at church, at the bank, at the grocery store, at the pharmacy, at the dry cleaners, and at the Dollar Tree and Dakota Boys Ranch thrift store, two places she particularly loved to frequent. She had a way of turning ordinary encounters into relationships. People remembered Shirley because Shirley remembered them. But for all the people she loved and all the ways she gave to her community, Shirley shined brightest as a mother and grandmother. She was a proud mama and a devoted "Grams." Her children and grandsons were at the center of her world. She loved them with a warmth that was tender, fierce, protective, and unconditional. She celebrated their accomplishments, worried about them when they were hurting, spoiled them when she could, and made sure they knew-without any doubt-that they were loved. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Lee Johnson Marn and her husband, Michael; her son, Charles James Johnson; her daughter-in-law, Quantia Willis; her grandsons, Daniel Bodhi Johnson and Dalton Nakoa Johnson; and many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, great-grandnephews, cousins, friends, and members of her church community. She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Daniel Charles Johnson who tragically passed away while serving in the army at the age of 27; her husband, Charles Lawrence Johnson; her brother, Arvid Larson; her sister, Norma Larson Antell; her half-sister, Beckley Lyons; her nephew Fred Larson, and nieces Dana Elavsky and Susan Lyons Swartz. In the last years of Shirley's life, as her health gradually declined, the care and love she had spent a lifetime giving to others came full circle. She came to live with her daughter and son-in-law in late April, where she was able to remain at home rather than face another institutional stay. It was a profound honor for her daughter to care for her during those final months-to be beside her, to keep her comfortable, to talk to her, to give her lots of hugs, and to simply be there. And, in the end, Shirley left this world as she had lived in it: surrounded by love. On the night she died, she was tucked into her bed and made comfortable. Her daughter sat with her, talked with her, kissed her forehead, and reassured her that she was safe and that she was loved. Shirley fell asleep peacefully. Her daughter remained nearby, as she had throughout those final months, and when Shirley passed, she was at home, in her own bed, with the people who loved her most close by. There are no words sufficient for the loss of a mother like Shirley. She taught her family how to love without an expiration date. She taught them that generosity is not about having enough to give, but about giving because someone else matters. She taught them to find humor in ordinary moments, to show up for people, to serve their communities, to love their families fiercely, and to never underestimate the power of a thoughtful gesture. Most of all, Shirley taught those she loved that love can be endless. She had a special way of saying goodnight and goodbye: "I love you to the moon and back, always and forever and ever." Those words were more than a familiar saying. They were Shirley's promise-a little piece of her heart that she gave away each time she said them. Her family will carry those words with them now. They will carry her laughter. Her stories. Her generosity. Her beautiful hairdos. Her funny carhop memories. Her love of thrift-store treasures. Her church suppers and book clubs. Her hugs. Her gifts. Her fierce mama heart. Her sunshine. And they will carry the certainty that they were loved by her-completely, fiercely, and without end. Shirley Diane Larson Johnson was deeply loved. She will be profoundly missed. And she will be loved to the moon and back, always and forever and ever. Memorial Services A Twin Cities memorial service will be held at Washburn-McReavy Crystal Lake Funeral Chapel, 3816 N Penn Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55412, on Friday, August 14, 2026. Public visitation: 12:00-2:00 p.m. Time of Sharing: 2:00 p.m. Family and friends are warmly invited to share memories and stories of Shirley during the Time of Sharing. A second memorial service will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church in Grand Forks, North Dakota, after August 21. Details will be announced when the date has been finalized.
