Robert Gilmore Lundholm

Lundholm, Robert Gilmore May 15, 1936 - August 8, 2026. Another of the good guys, gone too soon. His was a youthful spirit and characteristic curiosity at the age of 90. His passing was from complications of dementia. He was predeceased by parents Harold and Dorothy Gilmore Lundholm of Hopkins, MN. Bob was a graduate of The Blake School , Hopkins, MN. He attended Princeton University, graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in art history, and received an M.A.in English from St. Thomas University. He joined the Army Reserves as a Medical Corpsman and found his sense of order, purpose, and leadership served him well; he served in the Reserves for 15 years. Bob began his professional career with Minneapolis Honeywell, then moved on to work briefly in the field of custom research. Throughout his life, Bob managed to intertwine his interest in exploring new fields for self-challenge. At some point he decided it was important to learn to work with your hands as well as your head, and he began an adventure as a carpenter and woodworker, building everything from bookshelves to cabins. His sense of design, fastidiousness, and excellence were consuming, if frustrating. At the core, Bob's professions were defined by his love of playing sports, teaching, and coaching. Lundy's passion for teaching was realized at Blake School where he taught Middle School English and coached Varsity girls basketball in the early years of Title IX. He had a special zest for grammar and vocabulary - both fading art forms; a traditionalist and admirer of "old school" teaching, he was able to persuade students to share these enthusiasms. A gifted athlete, sports were a constant throughout his life. He had a contagious interest in competition, fair play and sportsmanship, and the resulting bonds of friendship with teammates. He played in local leagues of football, basketball, broom ball, and softball well into his 60's with the joys and intensity of youth. Nearly as strong as his love of playing sports was his love of music - classical and choral. He took great pleasure in participating in the choir, where he sang lustily and was known as something of an "approximatura", which he took as a compliment. Bob was a true Minnesotan in his love of our assets of nature, and was infinitely interested in the forests and fauna around him. He had a special affection for the family cabin "Aftermath" on the North Shore, where he worked with patience and perfectionism to protect this small creature of the woods. Bob is survived by his wife Carol, sister Karen (Nicholas Nash), daughter Elizabeth Ann, cousin Thomas of St. Paul, and cousins Peter (Pam) Lundholm , Mark (Susan) Lundholm, Martha (Goran) Jansson, Chuck*(Karen) Lundholm, Dorothy (Ron)Barton, Diana* (Joe) Giesler, John (Elaine) Bailey, and their extended families. *deceased A life of wonder and friendships . As Bob would say to anyone who would listen, " Everything is copacetic." Memorials to the Animal Humane Society or donor's choice.
