Robert James Hokanson

Hokanson, Robert J., age 87, Edina, MN, passed away March 23, 2026. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marcia, his loving son, Jim, and his parents, Sam and Helen Hokanson. Bob was a true family man. Bob was born into a loving family including his father, Sam, a carpenter, and his mother, Helen, a teacher, principal and Honeywell scientist, along with younger brothers Rick and Jerry. Bob was especially close with cousins Dick and Steve Swenson and Denny Munson who were close in age to he and his brothers. He lived as a child with his Uncle John, Aunt Alice, and cousins Cappy and Nancy. His Aunt Sophie Chin and cousins Yates and Kay were close along with his Aunt Hilma and Uncle Bernie Swenson, his Aunt Ruth Sundberg, and his Uncle Paul Sundberg. Bob graduated from Minneapolis Central High School in 1956 and the University of Minnesota with a degree in Physics in 1961. He blazed a trail in the nascent computer industry working for a series of companies from EMR to Sperry Univac to Loral to Lockheed. He was a fantastic husband, father and grandfather doting on his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed tennis, golf, and bridge and played with Marcia and a group of friends from church and the neighborhood throughout his adult life. Bob and Marcia shared a love of travel and traveled nationally and internationally throughout their fifty-year marriage including trips with David and Jim to the East Coast, West Coast, and Hawaii among others. Bob, Marcia, David, and Jim made numerous trips to Little Sand Resort in Park Rapids, Minnesota starting in the late 1970s with brother Rick, his wife Kathy, and their children Libby, Dan, and Katie. So many memories there of capturing crayfish, fishing for smallmouth bass, and canoe trips. More than anything, Bob and Marcia loved their children and grandchildren, Natalie, Ella, and Hannah . Bob coached David and Jim in hockey and baseball during their childhood. Bob and Marcia enjoyed summer visits with David and Jill's family including numerous trips to Disneyland, the Mall of America, a special trip to Hawaii in 2009, and many lunches at the American Girl Doll restaurant. His family has fond remembrances of Christmas and birthday celebrations with Hokanson's, Wyatt's, Swenson's, and Munson's. Christmas Eve celebrations in Anoka with in-laws Cliff and Hazel Wyatt as well as Mike, Kathy, Natalie, Jeff and Jason Wyatt were cherished. Bob and Marcia had a tremendous cadre of family and friends whom they cherished and who cherished them. Late in life, Bob enjoyed spending time with his lady friend, Mary Ellen. They loved spending time in beautiful places like the Arboretum with its beautiful trees and blooming flowers. Bob was a beloved member of the communities at Village Shores and Yorkshire of Edina and we have tremendous gratitude for the dedicated staff who cared for him. Bob was devoted to both the church of his youth, Zion Lutheran Church, and to Mount Olivet Lutheran Church where he volunteered as usher for decades. Bob was both brilliant and kind and a gentle man with a dry sense of humor. Survived by son, David (Jill); grandchildren, Natalie, Ella, and Hannah; brothers Rick (Peggy) Hokanson; Jerry (Carolyn) Hokanson; brother-in-law Mike (Kathy) Wyatt; lady friend Mary Ellen Gallick. Numerous other relatives including several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to a charity of your choosing. Private interment at Lakewood Cemetery. Evening visitation at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, Wed. April 1 from 5:00-7:00PM. Funeral service Thur. April 2 at Washburn-McREavy Edina Chapel at11:00 AM with visitation at 10:00AM.
