Robert Clayton Calgren

Robert Clayton Calgren, age 79, of Edina unexpectedly passed away on July 9, 2026. Robert is survived by his daughter Megan (James) Holroyd; his son Kevin (Sonya) Calgren; his grandchildren Owen Holroyd, Dylan Holroyd, Clara Calgren, and Henry Calgren; his sisters-in-law Cynthia McCuen and Joanie Wexler; his nephew Matthew (Taylor) McCuen; his great niece Emilia McCuen; his great nephew Carson McCuen, and several cousins. Robert is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mary Calgren; his father, Clayton Calgren; and his mother, Carol Calgren. Robert, affectionately known as "Bob," was born in Cokato, MN on July 23, 1946. An only child, he lived in Cokato with his parents until his father passed away when he was 12 years old. With his mother Carol, he moved to Wayzata, MN, graduating from Wayzata High School, where he especially enjoyed playing trumpet in the band. Bob attended Macalester College and majored in Economics. He played bagpipes in the Macalester pipe band as well as the trumpet. At Macalester College, he met the love of his life, Mary. Right near graduation, Bob went into the military during the Vietnam War. He proposed to Mary, and they moved to Denver, CO where they were married at the Lowry Air Force Base. Later, they lived in Merced, CA, but eventually raised their children and enjoyed retirement in Edina, MN. Bob's career was in the accounting field, working at Red Owl Foods, Accraply, and retiring as a Controller from Destron Fearing Company. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies. Bob played trumpet in the Minneapolis Police Band as a young adult and shared his love of music with his children. He enjoyed composing many songs on the piano, especially for special friends and family members, and he loved going to concerts, art museums, and theater shows with his wife. He was especially fascinated by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and traveled to find buildings that were designed by him. What people will likely remember about Bob was his incredibly dry sense of humor. He made many people laugh with a joke at the most unexpected times. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
