Randall Kevin Hodapp

Randall (Randy) Hodapp, age 76, passed away on August 18, 2026, ending a three and a half year battle with uveal melanoma, a rare eye cancer. Randy was born on Feb 10, 1950. His family moved to Mankato in 1964 where his parents both taught at Mankato State University (MSU). He attended Wilson Campus School and was a quiet leader in academics, clubs and sports, graduating in 1968. He earned a degree in Broad Science from MSU and took a job as a science teacher and coach for Hancock Public Schools. There, he met and began dating Vicki Heil, a fellow teacher. They married in 1983. Randy loved traveling. He and Vicki visited all 50 states, received 181 stamps visiting sites in the national parks system and explored many European countries. He also relished a good meal and an extraordinary one "made the journal". He collected coins and stamps. He mastered the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzles, in pen; loved eating oysters, hunting morels, and the Colts. Randy's incredible memory locked in birth dates, anniversaries and special events. He kept meticulous records of fishing details, pheasant hunting locations and player efficiency in card games. Randy's happy place was the family home on Lake Washington. His strong, teenage labor contributed to its construction. There he spent many wonderful hours fishing for walleye, relaxing around a fire or simply enjoying the view. Friends and guests were always welcome. An avid fan of MSU Maverick sports, Randy, along with Vicki, traveled to many football, basketball and hockey playoffs. His sister Debbie, also an MSU grad, often joined them. They were at the game when the Mavs men's basketball team won the 2024 NCAA D2 Championship in Evansville, IN. Beyond being a fan, he supported the Hodapp Athletic Scholarship Endowment, established by his family, to benefit a male and female Maverick athlete each year. Preceded in death by his parents, Marj and Jack, and sister Pam. Survived by his wife Vicki; sister Debbie Hodapp; nieces Nacia and Carmen Schreiner; lifelong friends Bernie, Brian, Craig, Eben, John - The Iron Six.
