Peter Swallen

Peter Swallen (1960 - 2025) Peter was truly special, one of the world's most friendly, interactive, and loving people. A true "people person," he wanted nothing more than to share whatever he had with everyone around him. He greeted the world with enthusiasm, eager to show you his latest treasures, often accompanying his welcome with hugs, kisses, and happiness. Born in 1960, Peter entered the world during an era with limited recognition or services for those with developmental disabilities, such as Angelman's syndrome. However, he was blessed with a fierce advocate in his mother, Sally. She devoted her life to supporting Peter and his brother, Matthew. Along with other families, Sally helped pioneer amazing improvements for the disability community across Minnesota-advancements that Peter benefited from throughout his lifetime. Peter found immense joy in the specific pleasures of life. He loved going to the movies, ice cream, and trips to the beach to play in the water. He was known for playing endless games of catch-using real balls or imaginary ones-and for his love of organizing things. He could happily spend hours sorting infinite tchotchkes into innumerable bags, and of course invite you to share in the process. As he grew up, Peter found a safe and caring home at Mount Olivet Rolling Acres (MORA). Later, he moved into a home-style setting in Chanhassen, where he lived with three housemates. Over the decades, these four, along with the incredible staff, became a tight-knit family, sharing all the love (and occasional spats) of close siblings. He lived a life there filled with respect, value, and community. Peter is survived by his younger brothers, John (Tamara) and Stephen (Karen), and his loving extended family, including nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his devoted parents, his mother, Sally (Robert) and his father, Thomas (Diane), and his older brother, Matthew. With deep love and gratitude, Stephen and John wish to thank the many people who played big roles in making Peter's life as joyous as it was. To his "circle of friends," his extended family, the staff at his house, those at CHOICE and other day centers, and the many dedicated and loving folks at MORA: thank you for enriching his life. A ceremony of remembrance will be held at Washburn-McReavy Funeral Home in Edina on Saturday, December 20, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to Mount Olivet Rolling Acres (MORA) would be greatly appreciated.
