Marcia Elaine Lary

Marcia Elaine Lary, b. 14 September 1937, Minneapolis, Minnesota, d. 13 October 2017, at Willamette View Retirement Community, Portland, OR. Marcia was born in Minneapolis, MN to Arthur Louis Wilhelm Anderson (born in Minneapolis) and Verna Mildred Erickson (originally from Comfrey/Springfield, MN). She married Douglas J. Lary, 30 December 1960 at the Bloomington Heights Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, MN. Marcia is survived by her husband and three children; Barbara Elaine Lary and Susan Elizabeth Walsh (Martin Scott), Portland, OR and David John Lary (Brenda Hagan), Churubusco, IN; and grandchildren Brendan Lary Walsh and Megan Elaine Walsh, Portland, OR; Abigail Catherine Lary, Natalie Elizabeth Lary, and Caitlyn Jane Lary, Fort Wayne, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her brother Duane Arthur Anderson. Memorial services will be held at the Washburn-McReavy Nokomis Park Chapel, 1838 E. Minnehaha Parkway, Minneapolis, MN on Monday, 6 November, 1:00 p.m. with visitation 1 hour before the service. The interment will follow at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials should be directed to the Blue Heron Foundation of the Willamette View Retirement Community, Portland Oregon or to Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon. Marcia lived in Little Rock, AR, Minneapolis, MN, and San Francisco, CA while growing up, while her father was employed by the Army Corps of Engineers and the Minnesota State Highway Department. She received her BS in Accounting from the University of Minnesota in 1959. She and one other woman were the first to major in accounting at the University of Minnesota as it was considered a man’s field at that time. After working for Investors Diversified Services as an investment research analyst, she married Douglas Lary in December 1960 following his graduation and commissioning in the Navy Supply Corps. They lived for six months at Athens, GA while Doug attended the Navy Supply School, then had residences in San Ramon Village, CA and Lakewood, CA following Doug’s duty assignments. Their daughter Barbara was born at the Oak Knoll Naval Hospital, San Leandro, CA while living in the Bay Area. Following Doug’s completion of active duty with the Navy, the family settled in Fort Wayne, IN where Susan and David were born. The first year they lived in a rented house in a northern suburb, then bought a house on Northwood Boulevard, in the city. When David entered pre-school, Marcia began working part time at the Wolf & Desauer department stores. When David entered school full time, Mrs. Morgan appeared on the scene as ‘house sitter’ while the kids were in school, and as an adopted Grandmother. This allowed Marcia to take a position with the People’s Bank Trust Department as an investment research analyst for a couple of years. She then took a position in the Household Goods Division of North American Van Lines (NAVL) as a financial analyst. Later she spent some time as benefits administrator in the Human Relations department and finally became Manager of Payroll and Accounts Payable, a position she held for about 20 years. Marcia was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1993, but continued at NAVL until retiring at the end of 1998. Among other accomplishments Marcia obtained her MSBA from Indiana Purdue at Fort Wayne in 1978, and became a Certified Payroll Specialist. She organized and co-chaired (with Doug) the formation of the Northside Neighborhood Association, and served with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Volunteers as Treasurer and on the Annual Gala fundraising committee. Marcia was a 50-year member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. She also led the revitalization of a Parkinson’s Support Group and Parkinson’s Exercise program in Fort Wayne, and did this again after they moved to Portland. She has traveled extensively around the United States and Europe. After 25 years in the house on Northwood Blvd, Marcia and Doug designed and built a new home in the Pine Valley addition, north of Fort Wayne. In 2009 as Parkinson’s disease was making life more challenging, Marcia and Doug moved to the Willamette View Retirement Community in Portland, OR to be closer to their daughters. In her later years, Marcia enjoyed assembling a history of her family including ancestors in southern Minnesota and Sweden. Now she is visiting them personally, without the burden of her mortal coil.
