Lucille Ann Johnson

The story of Lucille Ann Johnson begins with her grandparents who immigrated from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, making their way to the upper mid-west. Her parents, Fridolph Johnson and Amelia Nelson, met on a train leaving Wakefield, NE. Fridolph was going home to Chicago and Amelia to Kadoka, SD to teach grammar school. They married June 14, 1924 and moved to the farm Fridolph was building in Cloverland, WI. Five children soon followed; Carroll, Lois, Lucille (September 23, 1929), LaVonne, and Harlan. Farming Lake Superior red clay was difficult, and Fridoph died of complications from an appendicitis in 1935.Although the young family tried to keep the farm, it was the Depression, and was sold a short time later. With hard work, a tight community, and the support of their church, Amelia kept the family together, though they moved numerous times. Lucille attended school in Cloverland, graduated from High School in Superior, WI, and continued on to obtain a Teaching Certificate. She taught school in Borea, WI for several years. During that time First Covenant Duluth had a program that encouraged young people to write to the young men working on the lake freighters. Soon a relationship developed with Rodney L. Johnson, and that friendship became love. They were married August 1, 1953 in the Cloverland Covenant Church, living first in Superior where Lynnette and Marlys were born, before moving to Lakeside. Son Greg was born during their years in the little green house.Rodney's employer, GE Supply, transferred him to the Twin Cities in 1962, which brought them to the house in Roseville, MN. For 3½ years Lucille fostered 56 babies before adoption in addition to raising her family. When the children were in school full time, Roseville Public Schools and Minnehaha Academy, she returned to college and received a teaching degree from the University of Minnesota in 1968. She taught kindergarten at Weaver school in Maplewood for 25 years, a couple of those at Hazelwood in 2nd grade.Lucille and Rodney were early members of Roseville Covenant Church, serving wherever needed. The children married, and 5 grandchildren were welcomed. Upon Lucille's retirement, she and Rodney traveled, enjoyed their growing family, and she spent many hours reading, gardening, and armchair quilting. In 2012 Rodney passed away from Parkinsons, while Lucille continued her struggle with stenosis of the spine. In late June she was diagnosed with stomach cancer, and passed away July 23, 2018 at her home of 56 years.She was a good mother, loved her family and friends, but most of all Jesus Christ her Lord, serving and loving Him all through her life. Though her body failed, she is now rejoicing in heaven with all who have gone before.She is survived by two sisters, Lois Green and LaVonne (Pete) Bartczak; children, Lynnette (Brian) Wass, Marlys (Dale) Ahlberg, and Greg Johnson; grandchildren, Ingrid (Tom) Noble, David (Kallie) Wass, Britta (Paul Tokar) Wass, Bjorn (Lauren) Ahlberg, and Anders (Ashley) Ahlberg; and 5 great grandsons, Thaddeus, Leif, and Jesper Noble, Erik and Drew Wass.Memorial Service on Saturday August 11 at 11:00 am at Roseville Covenant Church, 2865 Hamline Ave N. Roseville, MN. Memorials to Roseville Covenant Church or Minnehaha Academy.She loved well and we will miss her greatly. Peace be to her memory.
