Lila (Brekke) Kravetz

Kravetz, Lila V. (Brekke) Age 90, of Minneapolis, passed away January 14, 2011. Lila was born in Frost, MN, the third of six children, and graduated from Frost High School. She attended the Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, MN graduating in 1942, and worked at the Mayo Clinic during her training. Her career began as a railroad nurse spanning 10 years, 3 railroad lines, and living in Chicago, St. Louis and Seattle; a highlight of her career was starting the nurse-stewardess program for the Northern Pacific Railway. She also worked for the Chicago Board of Health delivering babies, then as a surgical nurse for a prominent plastic surgeon. Lila served in WWII as an army nurse on the hospital ship "Dogwood," bringing home injured soldiers from the Philippines. Lila married Rudy Kravetz in 1963; they admired and loved each other immensely. They enjoyed working, traveling the world and doing everything together including running a real estate business, and owning and managing residential and commercial properties in the Uptown area. She also used her nursing skills as co-owner and Administrator of the Queen Nursing Home with her two brothers. Lila was a savvy business woman and enjoyed investing in the stock market. She was active in the Zuhrah's Ladies' Society, the Lionness Club, and other volunteer work. She was a member of the Northern Pacific Railway Historical Association, the Southwest Center for Seniors, and Mount Olivet Lutheran Church. The last year of her life, she greatly appreciated the care she received from Jones-Harrison staff and, most recently, from Hospice of the Twin Cities. Lila was an avid, life-long learner who loved life and truly enjoyed people. She will be dearly missed by many. Preceded in death by husband, A. Rudy Kravetz; sister, June Brekke; brothers, Edwin (who died in infancy), DeVere and Sherwood Brekke; brothers-in-law, Max Adix, and Frank, Ralph, and Sam Kravetz; and nephew, Steven Adix. Survived by sister, Maurine Adix; sisters-in-law, Joyce and Arlene Brekke; brother-in-law, Lewis Kravetz; nieces and nephews and their families as well as many friends. Funeral Service Friday, January 21, at 11 AM with visitation one hour prior to the service, Mount Olivet Church, 5025 Knox Avenue South, Minneapolis. Private interment at Lakewood Cemetery.
