Staples, Kenneth Arthur Was born 11/9/26 and passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on 9/8/14. He is survived by his loving wife Martha of 63 years; children, Susan (John) Grabowski, Roy (Barb) Staples, Randy and Dan Staples; grandchildren, Katie Corbett Phenow & husband Adam, Shaun Corbett, Tim Staples, Greg Staples and step-grandsons, Jake, Matt and Andrew Grabowski, and 7 great-grandchildren. Also survived by brother, Art (Liz) Staples; sister, Corrine Johnson and many nieces & nephews. Ken grew up in St. Paul going to Humboldt High School. He graduated in 1946 and signed to play baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers, passing up an offer to play hockey with the Chicago Black-hawks. Ken continued with the Dodgers organization for 10 years. Ken spent 2 years in the US Army stationed at Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam, Houston, TX. He attended college at St. Thomas coaching baseball and hockey and playing football for one year. He was awarded the Mr. Tommy in 1959 and is a member of the St. Thomas Hall of Fame. He taught social studies at Robbinsdale and Cooper High Schools retiring in 1986. He coached baseball and hockey at both schools. Ken was associated for many years with the Minnesota Twins, working in the minor leagues and at spring training. Highlights of Ken's career: Gov. Rudy Perpich named Ken Staples Day in 1978; 1980 - named Manager for the Minnesota Twins Class A Club in Wisconsin Rapids; 1986 - inducted to the Mobile, AL Hall of Fame; 1992 - elected to the St. Paul Athletes Hall of Fame; 1998 - honored as one of the 100 top athletes in 100 years at the St. Paul High Schools; won 3 consecutive pennants mangaging Minnesota Twins Class A in St. Cloud; 1996-2003 - Manager of the Osceola, WI Braves baseball team, taking them to 6 trips to State and winning the State Championship in 2003. In 2006, he was inducted into the Minnesota High School Hockey Hall of Fame; worked 14 years for the Minnesota Twins Clinics; 2009 - inducted to the Osceola Braves Hall of Fame; 2010 inducted to the Minnesota High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. All memorials will be given to local community sports programs supporting youth in baseball and hockey. Private interment, Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Mass of Christian Burial Friday, 9/12/14, 10 AM, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 9100 93rd Ave N., Brooklyn Park.
