Dr. Jon Stuart Fredlund

Fredlund, Jon S., M.D. Age 86 ' Anoka, Minnesota Jon Stuart Fredlund, beloved husband, father, proud Papa, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, and family physician to generations of families in the Anoka community, passed away peacefully at home, just as he wished, at the age of 86 on June 16th. Jon was a man who lived a full and extraordinary life, but what mattered most to him was never a title or an accomplishment. It was the people he loved, the people he cared for, and the stories and memories he created along the way. Jon grew up in Minneapolis as the oldest of three children born to Dr. Melvin and Delphie Fredlund. He attended Minnehaha Academy, graduating in 1957, followed by Gustavus Adolphus College and the University of Minnesota Medical School, where he earned his medical degree in 1964. The very day Jon finished taking his medical boards, he married the "catch of his life," Liz in Northfield, Minnesota. That began a beautiful marriage that lasted 62 years and became the foundation of a family Jon cherished beyond words. After completing his internship at Orange County Hospital in California, Jon was drafted into the United States Army. He trained at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, with the 101st Airborne Division, serving as both a doctor and a paratrooper in Okinawa and Vietnam. He successfully completed 15 jumps and earned the fitting nickname, "The Jumping Doc." After two years of military service, Jon began his residency in Family Practice in Des Moines, Iowa. Upon completing his residency, he made his way back home to Minnesota and joined the Mork Clinic in 1968. For the next 30 years, Jon devoted himself to the practice of family medicine. He especially loved the people he worked with and the patients he cared for. To Jon, being a physician was never simply a profession. It was an opportunity to get to know people, help people, listen to their stories, and become a part of their lives. Many patients became lifelong friends, and many families came to know Jon not simply as their doctor, but as someone they could count on. Jon's love for his family knew no bounds. In one of the most profound examples of that love, he generously donated one of his kidneys to his sister, Sue. Following that lifesaving surgery, Jon made the decision to retire from his medical practice. Jon's interests and talents were as wide-ranging as his personality, and he always found something to enjoy-and someone to enjoy it with. His family, grandchildren, neighbors, friends, former patients all have stories about Jon. Anyone who spent time with him was likely to leave with a story of their own. He loved hunting, fishing, golfing, archery, travel, gardening, and playing cards with the guys. Jon also had a longstanding commitment to serving his community. He gave his time and energy to Kiwanis, the YMCA, Feed Our Starving Children, and Golden Gloves of America, where he served as a ringside doctor. He also loved cheering on his beloved Golden Gophers, Vikings, and Wild, and especially enjoyed watching and cheering for his grandsons. Whatever Jon did, he did it enthusiastically-and usually competitively. Education and learning were also deeply important to Jon. He believed strongly in continuing to learn, encouraging others with his simple but lasting advice to keep learning, and don't take any wooden nickels. Even as his health declined, Jon continued to learn. He developed a passion for genealogy and spent time tracing his family history. During that journey, he discovered that his great-grandfather had been a pastor at Zion Lutheran Church-the very church Jon and his family joined in 1968. It was one more beautiful connection between his family's past, present, and future. Jon leaves behind a family who will carry his stories, lessons, laughter, and love with them always. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Liz; his children, Diane and Brian (Denise); his grandsons, Casey (Laura and son Arlo), Corey (Joelle), Josh (Caitlyn), Trystan (Sami and son Raylin), and Tyler; his great-grandchildren, Calianna and Cameron; his brother, Paul Fredlund (Penny); brother-in-law, Dave Wegge; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family members who were blessed to know him. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved sister, Sue Wegge. Jon will be remembered for: his dedication to medicine, his service to his country, his adventurous spirit, his competitive streak, his curiosity, his quick wit, his love of family and his strong faith in God. But perhaps he will be remembered most for the way he made people feel. He listened. He taught. He teased. He encouraged. He showed up. And he made sure there was always another story to tell. His family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the pastors and congregation at Zion Lutheran Church, the team at St. Croix Hospice, and caregivers at Hallmark Homecare for the kindness, compassion, and care they provided to Jon and his family. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, August 14, at 2:00 p.m., with visitation beginning one hour prior at Zion Lutheran Church, 1601 South 4th Avenue, Anoka, Minnesota 55303.
