Elsie Katherine Latawiec

Elsie Katherine Latawiec, of New Brighton, formerly of Columbia Heights, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2026, at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Chester W. Latawiec Sr., her parents Emanuel and Frances (Hruby) Sunsdahl, her brother Orvis Sunsdahl, and her sister Irene Verbout. She is survived by her brother Emanuel Sunsdahl and her sister Marilyn Harle. She is also survived by her sons, Chester Latawiec Jr. (Rose) and Douglas Latawiec (Jenifer), and by her grandchildren Katelyn, Nathan, Emily, Alexander, Cecilia, Jacinta, Michael, Gabriele, Ave' Mary, Joseph, Raphael, Xavier, Bernadette, Lucia, Emanuel, Maximilian, Kateri, Immaculee, and Antoine. Her great-grandchildren include Natalie, Faith, Sophia, Hope, Wyatt, Rudy, Lucille, Abel, Elijah, Reina, Gianna, Bellemy, Damian, Ambrose, Avila, Lisieux, Vianney, Sofia, Izabella, and Xander. Elsie was born on May 27, 1929, in Highlanding Township, Minnesota. She married Chester W. Latawiec Sr. on June 17, 1950. Elsie earned her nursing diploma from Ancker Hospital (today known as Regions Hospital), her bachelor's degree in nursing at the University of Minnesota and later earned three additional master's degrees in nursing, mental health, and pastoral ministry. She served as a public health nurse for the Mounds View School District until her retirement in 1992. Elsie was a long-time member of Alpha Delta Kappa Foundation in support of women educators. She also served for ten years as a sacristan at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in New Brighton and faithfully brought Holy Communion to those who were homebound. Elsie's life was rooted in her Catholic faith, her devotion to family, and her service to others. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a constant source of joy. She and Chet treasured summers at their cabin on Lake Vermilion and winters at their condominium in Phoenix, Arizona. Elsie was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Surrounded by family and friends, Elsie entered eternal life in peace, accompanied by prayer, rosaries, and the sacramentals of the Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 15, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 835 2nd Avenue NW, New Brighton. Visitation will take place one hour prior to Mass at the church. Interment will be at St. John the Baptist Cemetery with lunch to follow. Flowers may be sent to the church. Memorial gifts in Elsie's name may be made to Women's Life Care Center, 2780 Middle Street, Saint Paul, Minnesota 55117.
