Dorothy Ruth Koeppen 1932-2026 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy Koeppen on April 1, 2026 at the age of 94. The best motto that describes our mother is "Live, Laugh, Love", for she truly did love life, her family, friends, and all her caregivers. If you knew our mother, you shared in her laughter even up to her final days recalling joyful memories. For much of her life those were deep belly laughs, the best kind. We wish to thank Osseo Benedictine for their care and creating a home for her these past few years. We also express our deepest gratitude to Caretenders Hospice for their care and walk with mom during her journey. Our mom was fiercely independent, sometimes to a fault. Both organizations embraced this while at the same time encouraging her to accept help. In the end she transitioned peacefully with the help of loving and trusted caregivers. On March 4, 1932 Lula and Edwin Dicks welcomed their sixth of seven children, Dorothy Ruth. The average life expectancy for a female born in 1932 was 63.5 years. Ninety-four years later, Dorothy celebrated her birthday by dining with family at Perkins ordering her favorite Belgian waffle and side of bacon- well done. She also enjoyed a visit with family on her birthday sharing cupcakes with residents and staff. Dorothy was the last living member of her family of origin. Dorothy developed a strong work ethic early on beginning her first job as a dishwasher at the age of twelve at Swezy's Hamburger Shop. As a teen, into young adulthood, she worked for two different dry cleaners. She then worked from 1955-1971 as a telephone operator at Northwestern Bell. Dorothy was employed for 17 years as a nursing assistant in a nursing home in Correctionville, Iowa. She was a home care worker and personal attendant for several years prior to moving to Robbinsdale. She finally retired at age 79 ½ after working nights as a hotel clerk for 17 years. Dorothy loved going to the movies as well as Broadway shows. She enjoyed reading, putting 1000-piece puzzles together, doing crosswords, and word searches. Sewing was a lifelong hobby until her eyesight no longer allowed her to do so. Dorothy was skilled at making clothing, crafts, and quilts. She made the banner for the Cushing Iowa Bicentennial Parade in 1976. She helped the neighborhood kids create a float sewing the pioneer costumes. Her home in Cushing was part of the holiday open house with Christmas decorations artfully displayed. Dorothy also crocheted, making blankets for gifts for family and friends. While at Benedictine she enjoyed going to exercise class and making crafts. Our mom was fond of sending cards to family and friends most recently delivering valentines day cards to her friends at Benedictine. Dorothy married Harold Koeppen on May 25, 1957. They lived in Cushing, Iowa until their move to Robbinsdale in 1994. Dorothy is survived by her 4 children: Julie Lapointe (John), Todd Koeppen (Holly), Amy Adkins, and Kerry Koeppen, as well as 17 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Our mother once said her life has not been interesting. When we think about her life stories interwoven amidst world history, during those 94 years, we would describe it as remarkable, a life story that reflects a woman of strength and capability. Here are the lessons gleaned from her 94 years of living: 1. When life knocks you down, get up and try again. 2. Have a sense of humor. Find those belly laughs. 3. Be kind to others. Help those who need a helping hand. In celebration of a wonderful life! If you wish to honor Dorothy enjoy a blizzard at the Dairy Queen with one of your favorite people.
