Doris (Keller) Olson

Olson, Doris Keller 92, went home January 4, 2017. Doris was born November 11, 1924 in St. Paul to Frank and Charlotte Keller. She grew up in Rose Hill with older siblings Jane & John. She graduated from Marshall High School in 1942, attended Macal-ester College, and graduated from St Cloud State with a BS in Elementary Education. While attending St Cloud State, she met Norman Olson from Chokio, MN. They married August 7, 1949 and taught in Russell and Marietta, MN while earning their Master's Degrees from the University of Northern Colorado. They moved to Marshall in 1954 and Doris started Playmates Nursery School in her home. In 1969 Doris joined the Education Department at Southwest State University as a paraprofessional and later taught in Early Childhood education. Doris and Norm loved to travel. Christmas, Easter, and summer vacations regularly saw the family leaving in the station wagon pulling a 13 foot trailer that had all the comforts of home. Doris would read out loud for hours at a time. It was quiet in the car and we all loved Penrod and Sam, Little Orvie and other classics. Doris was active in the community. She served in the local chapter of AAUW and helped start the popular Tour of homes in Marshall. She loved music and had season tickets to the MN Orchestra and the St Paul Chamber Orchestra. After Doris and Norm retired, they spent 5-6 months at Lake Oscar near Alexandria and wintered in Roseville when they weren't traveling. Their biggest achievement in retirement was bringing up another generation of Olsons. They raised their grandchildren, Christina, Perry, and John and helped them leave the nest. In 2012, Doris moved into the Terraces (independent living) at Johanna Shores in Arden Hills. She had a beautiful large apartment overlooking Lake Johanna. She loved the views and loved the community of friends she made there. Doris loved antiquing, sewing and quilting. She loved to entertain and guests often left with a gift. Doris will be remembered as smart, funny, kind, generous, thoughtful and wise. Doris was preceded in death by husband Norm and son Perry. She is survived by son Doug (Malibu, CA), daughter Sally (Warren) Daluge, Loretto, MN, grandchildren Christina (Kyle) Harlan, Wesley, IA, Perry (Sarah), Mason City, IA, John (White Bear Lake), and great-Grandchildren James Anderson and Savannah Olson. A Celebration of Life will be held on January 13 in the Fellowship Hall at Johanna Shores, 3200 Johanna Shores Blvd, Arden Hills, MN; gathering at 10:30 AM, celebration at 11:00 AM.
