Donald H Moersch

Moersch, Donald H. of Edina, age 86, passed away peacefully on Dec. 18, 2015 in the presence of his family who handed him over to his Lord. Preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Herman J. and Charline B. Moersch; brother, Dr. Richard N. Moersch and his wife Mary Lou Moersch; and great-nephew Travis Moersch. Survived by his loving wife, Lorelie ("Lorie") and two adoring daughters, Susan and husband Doug Johnson, and Nancy and husband Michael Hagerty. Also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Ben and Brandon Johnson, and Patrick and Nora Hagerty; brother-in-law Douglas Korn and wife Elaine; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and the Gray/Bones family. Don was born in Rochester, MN on Aug. 23, 1929. He attended Rochester public schools and graduated from Rochester High School as part of the famous class of 1947, where he excelled in track and basketball. He attended Wesleyan University and the University of Minnesota, where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and received a degree in Economics in 1952. Don joined the U.S. Marine Corps upon graduation, where he served as a carrier pilot in Squadron VMA 331. During his military career, Don flew Corsair, P-51 and SNJ planes, served as a test pilot for cantilevered decks and steam catapults, and instructed other pilots. After his discharge, he returned to Minnesota where he served in the Naval Reserves and attended the University of Minnesota, receiving a Masters in Industrial Relations in 1958. Don was a respected human resources executive, working at Texaco, Jostens, Pillsbury, and most significantly, at ADC Telecommunications for 21 years. He retired from ADC in 1991 as Vice President of Human Resources. Throughout his career, Don was passionate about doing the right thing for each and every employee in his care. Although Don accomplished much during his career, his favorite moments were those spent with family. Don married Lorelie Korn on May 14, 1966, thus beginning an almost 50-year marriage defined by teamwork, love, and at least one laugh every day. Don was a devoted father and teacher to his daughters, whether drilling them in the Marine Corps march, helping with school projects (where he always earned an "A" grade), or leading the family on road trips across the country. In later years, he was a trusted advisor to both daughters in the development of their careers. Don was a loving and attentive grandfather to his grandchildren, on the sidelines at numerous sporting events and other activities with words of encouragement. Don was also enamored with dogs of all kinds, and had a particularly close relationship with grand-dog Greta, who preceded him to heaven earlier this year. An avid golfer, Don was a long-time member of Minnesota Valley Country Club in Bloomington, MN and was shooting his age in his 70s and 80s. Besides the game, he enjoyed the company of the wonderful men with whom he walked the course over the years. In his retirement, Don continued to give to others, serving on advisory boards and helping friends and family with projects (there was no fix-it job that Don couldn't tackle as he always had the right tool or part in his vast basement hardware store). Retirement also allowed him to spend time with great friends from Rochester High School and their spouses, travelling the country and world together. Don's humor, selflessness, and above all humility, were qualities that defined his life. He was the consummate gentleman and personified the Marine motto Semper Fidelis (always faithful). We love you, Don. The family wishes to especially thank the staff and volunteers of N.C. Little Memorial Hospice for the loving care given to Don in his final days. Memorials preferred to Gethsemane Memorial Foundation, N.C. Little Memorial Hospice, or donor's choice. Memorial service Monday, Dec. 28, 11 AM, Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 715 Minnetonka Mills Road, Hopkins. Reception to follow service at the church.
