David Lee Richardson

David Lee Richardson, 58, of Minneapolis, MN, passed away on June 11th, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of vibrant art, tastefully loud music, a home of well-loved cats, and two beautiful daughters who were his world. Born on June 1st, 1968, in Baraboo, Wisconsin, to Gary and Gretchen Richardson, David quickly proved that the world was his canvas. He graduated from Wasson High School in 1986 and began his college journey at the University of Northern Colorado. His artistic passion eventually drew him to the Twin Cities, where he found his true creative home at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. David turned his passion into a career, starting as a talented art director and later moving into his natural role as an executive creative director. He was made to lead. He was married to Kirki Schultz from 1998 until 2010, and together they welcomed the true masterpieces of his life: his children, Sam Leigh Richardson and Avery Ann Richardson. David lived his life fully immersed in creativity and shared that talent with everything he touched. His home was always filled with the sounds of The Replacements and Johnny Cash records turned up just a little too loud, depending on who you ask. When he wasn't tending to his turntable, he was spending time with his daughters, cooking, taking drives, exploring the streets of New York City, and teaching them everything he knew about life. Between his humor, never-ending list of stories, and passion for design, there was a lot to learn from him. He was truly an artist. The saying goes "seeing the world through rose-colored glasses," but he preferred a pair of orange-tinted ones, and that is how we prefer it, too. David is survived by a loving family who will miss his warmth and humor deeply: Gary and Gretchen Richardson, his parents. Sam and Avery Richardson, his beloved children. Ex-wife and best friend, Kirki Schultz Laura McGrew and Susan Richardson, his sisters. Henry, Glenn, and Debbie Harry Cat, his three cats. A celebration of David's life will take place on Saturday, July 11th, 2026, at 2:00 PM. Friends and family are invited to gather at the Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel in Edina, Minnesota. The worship service starts at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, David's family requests that you channel his generous spirit into the things he loved most.
