Amy Joan Hnilicka

Amy Joan Hnilicka (nee Stafki), 61, died of cancer in her home on May 19th with her husband beside her and with the prayers of countless friends and family. Amy was born on Feb. 24, 1964 at St. Joseph's hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. She spent her childhood in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, and Powers Lake, North Dakota. She would often say that she and her siblings would "run the small town" in North Dakota. She loved the beauty of the prairie. Her family moved to Boise, Idaho, for her Dad's health. Amy worked as a waitress to help support her family. Later, she learned the art of word processing and was hired by Boise Cascade (a paper company) as a secretary. With her background in proofing letters, she always had a quick eye for errors in writing. Any corrections she made were from a gracious spirit that wanted language to be at its best and most ordered and understandable. After 12 years in Boise, Amy moved back to Minnesota where she met her husband. She worked in the communications department of the Archdiocese, where she met Archbishop Flynn, who always pronounced her name the French way (I-may), which she loved. Later, he witnessed her marriage. Amy loved to experience both the mountains and the coastline of the ocean, especially the western coast. She loved visiting Lake Superior because it reminded her so much of the sea. Amy was a gentle and patient wife and mother, homemaker, and home-schooler. She devoted her life to gentle parenting, emphasizing a relationship of trust and nurturing with her family. She was an understanding, loving grandmother. Amy brought so much depth and richness to life by seeing everything in a poetic light. All things had transcendent meaning for her, and she helped others grasp the meaning, too. She knew how to make others feel loved. Amy knew a line from poetry for every occasion, often from one of her favorite poets: Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, or Christina Rossetti. She also enjoyed history, art, and classical music in all their various expressions. Amy often went on forays into different topics and would emerge with ideas to share with others to help inspire them. Amy is mourned by her husband, Christopher; and their children, Marie (Andrew), Madeleine (William), Joseph, and Gemma; her granddaughters; her mother, Patricia Stafki; and 4 siblings. Please join them in their prayers for her. Amy is preceded in death by her father, George Stafki; her sisters, Monica Stafki, Annette Stafki; and her son, Matthew. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday May 28 at 11 AM with visitation at 10 AM at Holy Family parish in St. Louis Park. Interment will take place at Epiphany Cemetery in Coon Rapids following the Mass. Amy's family would like to extend special thanks to the good people at St Croix Hospice.
