Allison Henry Ittel

Allison (Al) H. Ittel was called home to his Lord and Savior September 30, 2022, surrounded by his family. He was born July 24, 1931, in Waconia Twp, MN, to Henry and Eleanor (Hahn) Ittel. He was baptized August 16, 1931, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Young America, MN. He was confirmed April 14, 1946, at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake, MN, with Proverbs 23:26. Al graduated from Howard Lake High School in 1950 where he played football, baseball and trombone. He served with the 95th Military Police Battalion of the US Army from 1952-1954 during the Korean War. While in Japan and the day before his cancer surgery at the Tokyo Army Hospital, Al met and was photographed on the arm of Marilyn Monroe who was visiting US troops while on her honeymoon with Joe DiMaggio. On April 27, 1957, Al was united in marriage to Lorna Schmidt at Bethlehem United Church of Christ, Maple Lake, MN. They made their first home on a 10 acre hobby farm located in Howard Lake, MN. Al continued to own this property until his death. There were many summers spent watching skydivers descend to a nearby airfield, often times landing on their property; and where an immense garden was planted, weeded and harvested. In 1954, he was employed by the family-owned business Ittel's Meats & Frozen Food Center as a Meat Cutter/Butcher/Sausage Maker. In 1957, Al earned his Journeyman's Meat Cutter Certificate in Toledo, OH. In 1964, they moved to their present home in Brooklyn Center, MN, where Al was employed as a Meat Cutter by Red Owl Food Stores, Inc. in Excelsior and Mpls suburbs. In 1970, Al was employed as Head Meat Cutter/Market Manager at Thriftway Inc., Crystal, MN, retiring in October. 1984. Al was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Brooklyn Park, MN, where he served on various committees, attended Bible studies, and volunteered with newsletter collating. Al enjoyed many summer days at their cabin on Sugar Lake, Annandale, MN, which they bought in 1977. Here, his grandchildren were introduced to fishing, swimming, water skiing, tubing and wake boarding. He and Lorna were host to many family and friends with the motto "there's always room for one more." Al is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Lorna; children Daniel (Dona) Ittel, Deanne (Jeff) Carlson, Jon (Sue) Ittel and Jodi (Gerry) Brakke; grandchildren Anya Oulman (Tom Holzinger), Garrett Ittel, Raelene (Jessica) Roschlan, Caitlin Carlson, Tyler Ittel, Ashley (Cameron) Tompkins, Jessica Ittel, Bryant (Chloe) Brakke, Brenton Brakke, and Abbey Brakke; brother James Ittel, sister Donna Banks, sister-in-law Nelda Schmidt, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Al is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Eleanor (Hahn) Ittel, grandson Jamison Ittel, sister Ardyce Haarstick, brothers-in-law Keith Haarstick, Melvin Schmidt, Harold Schmidt, Charles Banks; sisters-in-law Carolyn Ittel, Glenice Schmidt; niece Kimberly Massey; father and mother-in law Hubert and Elsie (Ruge) Schmidt. The two most important things in Al's life were his faith and his family. Service Saturday, October 22, 2022, at 2 pm with visitation 1 hour prior at Grace Lutheran Church LCMS, 6810 Winnetka Ave N, Brooklyn Park MN. Family interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials preferred to The Michael J. Fox Foundation (Parkinson's research) or Grace Lutheran Church.
