December 20, 1933 - October 31, 2021
CARLSON, VIRGINIA JEAN Jean was born Dec. 20, 1933 and passed away October 31, 2021, at the age of 87. A strong-willed, energetic, thoughtful, and caring person, she made friends easily and kept them in high regard. She liked to ascribe her vibrant personality to her wee bit of Scotch-Irish heritage, rather than to what seemed to her to be the more placid Dutch and Swedish lineages which formed the majority of her background. Her big friendly smile will be forever missed! Born in Indianola, Iowa, she grew up mainly in Albia, Iowa and was always very proud of her Iowa roots. She lived the traditional life of a housewife, being a homemaker and raising her children, but with numerous other activities which added a lot of spice to her life. At the age 20 she left Iowa State University in Ames, IA in her last quarter to get married, she was dedicated to knowledge and learning. At age 50 she went back to school finishing her BA Degree in English at Augsburg College in MPLS. Her many passions included spirited discussions about most anything, reading and talking about the history of the world, being in on the ground floor of all new research involving foods and health, perusing Barnes and Noble, and sharing interesting articles and editorials from the many papers she subscribed to. When her granddaughter Amber was born she was delighted and spent as much time as possible with her as a young child. The two had a special bond and amazing understanding of each other. Jean's motto from the time she was a small child was "Never Get Angry" and she followed this all of her life. She is survived by her husband Don Carlson, her daughter Lora Mason (Tom), her sons Terry and Mark Vickrey, her grand-daughter Amber Mason (Aleks Siemaszko), her half brothers Ray Baker and David Hopper, a step-daughter Tina McCloud, and a step-son John Carlson. Arrangements are being made by Washburn McReavy Hillside Chapel for a "Green" burial, which she considered the most eco-friendly type of interment. Those who wish to join the family for a celebration of her smile, memorial service, Thursday November 18th at 2 pm at Washburn-McReavy Hillside Chapel 2601 19th Ave NE Minneapolis, MN 55418 www.Washburn-McReavy.com Hillside Chapel 612-781-1999
