Mary Margaret Timmerman

Age 80, of Columbia Heights, passed away February 10, 2025. Mary was born on October 29, 1944 to Palmer and Mary (Bowe) Balke of Minneapolis, MN. After graduating from North High School in Minneapolis, she began her 30+ year career with Social Security in Ft. Dodge, IA. It was in Ft. Dodge she met her husband, Fred, on a blind date. They married in 1969 and remained together until Fred's passing in 2014. Mary was survived by her daughters Mary (Michael) Timmerman-Parker and Susan Timmerman; grandchildren Catherine (Mike) Soles, great-grandchild, Carson (with another great-grandchild due soon!) and Nicholas (Alyssa) Parker. She is preceded in death by far too many she held dear, including her parents, husband, son (Jon), sisters Connie and Verna, brothers Maurie and Gerald. Recent losses include sister-in-law Nadyne Balke, niece Kristen LeRoux (Balke), sister-in-law Leona Haack (Timmerman) and nephew Steve Conley. Mary cared deeply for others, which is evident in how she lived her life. In addition to her work as a public servant, she devoted her life to many volunteer efforts. These included teaching religious education, leading Brownie/Girl Scout troops, volunteering at the library in Benicia, CA, serving as president of the Rancho Benicia Social Club and most near and dear to her, serving as a Regional Representative for the International Rett Syndrome Association. Mary's daughter, Susan, has Rett Syndrome. Mary was so proud that "the" Dr. Rett diagnosed Susan when they attended the first Rett meeting in Baltimore, MD. As a Regional Representative, she was instrumental in fighting for the rights of those with Rett Syndrome and their families. She worked tirelessly for Susan to receive complete and dignified care and education. Mary adored her grandchildren and great-grandchild beyond words. She always had time to take the grandkids to and from school, bring them to a movie, watch their sporting events, play games and corrupt them with chocolate. Mary enjoyed reading, casinos (including online games, which usually ended in viruses requiring tech support), games like Scrabble, trivia with friends, jokes and puns , the color yellow , crazy-patterned leggings and generally giving everyone heck. In place of flowers, please consider a donation to Living Well Disability Services (livingwell.org). Susan has resided in a group home managed by Living Well for more than 25 years. Services Monday, March 3, 2025 at Washburn-McReavy Shoreview. Visitation 10 - 11 AM, service 11 AM - 12 PM and luncheon 12 - 1:30 PM.
