Mary Sampson

Sampson, Mary Victoria of Jones Harrison Residence died gracefully in her sleep Friday morning May 2nd. She was 96. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Leonard Sampson and her parents, Alta and William Edwards. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Judith Johnson, son-in-law, Dr. Harry Johnson Jr. and cherished grandson, Christopher Bermel and wife Stefanie. Also dear to her heart are relatives, Marcia McCabe, four step grandchildren, Harry Johnson III and wife Dana, Sargent Johnson and wife Melissa, Steven Johnson and wife Liz, Anne Johnson deWeissenbruck, and husband, Gregory. She is also survived by ten step great-grandchildren, Harry "Gunnar" and Davey Johnson, Georgia, Nelle and Sargent Johnson, Julia and Steven Johnson and Helen Gregory Jr. and Charlotte deWeissenbruck. Also near to her were the Bradley Bowman and Gerald Erickson families. Mary graduated from West High School in Minneapolis with honors. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota where among several awards she was featured in the college newsletter article "Four Good Reasons Why Men Go To College". Mary was a tireless volunteer for Abbott Northwestern Hospital Childrens Ward and Gift Shop, the Minneapolis League of Women Voters and several other philanthropic causes. In 1943 she received a special Citation by the United States Treasury War Finance Committee for her political contributions toward the war effort in connection with the Second War Loan. Later in life she was an active member of the Edina Women's Club, the Alpha Phi Sorority Alumnae Club, and the Edina Country Club. In addition the "White Oaks" neighborhood where she lived for 63 years was extremely important to her and she enthusiastically supported its development. Finally Mary loved to play Gin Rummy and was a frequent winner. Above all Mary will be remembered for her kind, gentle and gracious spirit. Beautiful inside and out her unconditional love was a great gift to those who knew her. Mary Victoria Sampson never presumed that she could make a difference. Perhaps that is why she did. A special note of appreciation must be given to all the kind staff at Jones Harrison and Twin City Hospice who cared for Mary during her final days. Her family will be forever grateful. Funeral Service 12:00 Noon Friday, May 9th at Lakewood Cemetery Chapel, 3600 Hennepin Ave S., Minneapolis. Following the service there will be a reception at the Minikahda Club.
