Lewis "Lew" Curry

Curry, Lewis "Lew" A., Ph.D of Missoula, Montana, and Edina, Minnesota, age 52, died of a sudden heart attack on June 1, 2007 while fishing in Manitoba, Canada. Lew will best be remembered as a generous and inspirational coach and teacher. He touched the lives of thousands of students and athletes over 30 years with his highly effective and endearing brand of motivational leadership. Raised in Edina, Minnesota, Lew was an athletic standout, playing both hockey and football in college, where he went on to become a two-time All-American at North Dakota State University. His love of sports extended to the teaching field. He taught and coached football at North Dakota State and Montana State universities. Lew earned a Ph.D. in Applied Sport Psychology at the University of Kansas. He then taught at the University of Montana where he became a tenured professor. Lew left the teaching field in 2005 to found his own sports-psychology business named HopeScape Resource Centers. Lew's dream was to provide optimal performance awareness and enhancement for athletes. A published author and popular motivational speaker, Lew's legendary style of upbeat communication brought him the utmost respect in his field as well as the admiration of kids and their parents. Lew always made his close-knit family his first priority and would be quick to jump on an airplane to fly across the country to catch a hockey or soccer game of his beloved niece or nephew. Lew was preceded in death by his father, John Curry. He is survived by his mother, Hattie Curry of Edina, Minnesota; his brother, Steve Curry, sister-in-law Kathy, nephew John and niece Megan of Shorewood, Minnesota; and sister, Char Curry of Portland, Oregon. A memorial service will be held on June 11, 1 pm at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Excelsior, Minnesota. A second service will be held on June 14, 1:30 pm at University Congregational Church in Missoula, Montana.
