John Buckbee

Buckbee John C. III, age 91 John Colgate Buckbee III was born July 1, 1913, to John Colgate Buckbee II and Rachel Simmons Buckbee in Minneapolis. He lived a full life that ended peacefully at his home in Friendship Village in Bloomington on February 28, 2005 in the presence of his family. He was preceded by his parents, sister Elizabeth (Betty) Atkins, an infant son and wives Kay Kraft, the mother of his children, and Mary Wilkinson. Survived by his beloved wife, Audrey (Anderson), sister Marian (Gordon) Alexander, son John Colgate IV (Sanna), daughters Susan (Norman) Valentine and Donna Buckbee; Grandchildren Denise Buckbee and John Colgate V, Barry and Brian Valentine, Valentine daughters Linda Allen, Lisa Unsinn and Laura Dethlefson; 7 great grandchildren. Also step daughters Janet (Paul) Kellogg, Jeanne (Karl) Klusewitz. Step grandchildren Deidre Kellogg, and Todd, Kenneth and David Kellogg, Laurie Noren, Amy Hovey, Mark Thorvilson, Daniel, Christopher and John Mortenson; and 14 step great grandchildren. He is also survived by Joe Atkins, William, Frederick and Robert Wilkinson, many nieces, nephews and multitudes of friends. John graduated from Washburn HS and U of M School of Law. He practiced Law in New York before serving in the FBI during WWII in Washington, D.C. and New York. He then returned to Minneapolis, and was Chairman and CEO of the family business, Bureau of Engraving, Inc., until his retirement. John loved God, nature and people. Everybody was his friend. He traveled extensively, enjoyed playing bridge and golf and spent winters in Rio Verde, Arizona until his illness in 2002. In retirement, he developed a fine skill in wood carving. He was a gifted piano player and singer; over the years he entertained family and friends with his music, grace and wit. The past several years he and Audrey played together on two pianos almost daily for the enjoyment of residents and friends. He will be greatly missed. He was a member of the Minikahda Club, Gyro Club, Rotary Club, Minneapolis Club, "M" Club and the Society of Former Agents of the FBI. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 5 at Friendship Village (in Friendship Hall), 8100 Highwood Drive, Bloomington, Minnesota. There will be a private interment. Special thanks to David, Judith, Christina and Barton, Deidre, and all of the staff in the Red Pine Unit and all of the support staff at Friendship Village for their loving care.
