James (Jim) Higgins

Higgins James R. (Jim) Higgins, of New Brighton, passed away at the age of 88, surrounded in love by his family. Preceded in death by parents, James A. & Emma Higgins; sisters, Eleanor (Clarence) Stone and Virginia (Toby) Smestad; brother, Herb Higgins; brother-in-law, James Maas; and beloved wife of 55 years, Clara B. Higgins. Survived by daughters, Darlene Higgins (special friend Dennis Olsen), Marilynn (Cliff) Pavlak; son, James F. (Mary Jean) Higgins; grandsons, Jeff and John Higgins, Cristopher and Nickolas Wraspir, and their father, Lee Wraspir; sisters, Genevieve (Ray) Roswold, Betty Maas, Joyce (Robert) Kallestad; sister-in-law, Norma Higgins, and many nieces and nephews. Jim lived most of his life in NE Mpls. He was a 1935 graduate of Edison High School, devoted member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and founder of Higgins Insurance Agency, Inc. in 1950. Jim proudly served in the US Navy during WWII in the South Pacific. He was a member of Lincoln Chapter Order of DeMolay and recipient of The Chevalier Award. Member of Arcana Masonic Lodge #187 AF & AM (Treasurer for 32 years and recipient of the Hiram Award), Scottish Rite, 32nd degree Mason and KCCH, Zuhrah Temple of the Shrine, Big Brothers Unit (former president), NE Mpls Shrine Club, Past Associate Guardian Job's Daughters Bethel #19, NE Mpls Kiwanis Club (charter member, past president, member of the NE Kiwanis Foundation, and a George F. Hixson fellow), Eastside YMCA (Red Triangle Award recipient), and Central Northwestern Bank Board of Directors. Jim was named as a Star Tribune "Town Topper," WCCO Good Neighbor, and was a Grand Marshall of the East Side Parade in 1989. Jim was referred to by many as "Mr. Northeast" having worked on Central Avenue his entire life. He was a very social and active man, always friendly and willing to give of his time and talents to others - truly a gentlemen's gentleman. Visitation Sunday, 3- 8 PM, Washburn- McReavy NE Chapel, 29th & Johnson, NE Mpls. Funeral service Monday, 11 AM, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Lowry & Quincy, NE Mpls. Interment Hillside Cemetery, St. Anthony. Visitation at church one and one-half hours prior to the service. Memorials preferred to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Zuhrah Shrine Auxiliary, or the NE Mpls Kiwanis Foundation.
