James Sidney Garberg
August 13, 1922 - May 21, 2022
James S. Garberg, of Edina, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2022, 3 months shy of his 100th birthday. Preceded in death by his wife of 62 years Peggy, daughters Connie Garberg, Margaret (David) Bush and Mary (Thomas) Pavek. Born in Minneapolis to James and Jeane Garberg in 1922. He was a 1941 graduate of Saint Thomas Military Academy, and his experience there had a profound impact on his life. Jim served valiantly in the Army during WW II on the Island of Attu in the Aleutian Islands as an Officer in the 32nd Infantry Regiment of the 7th Infantry Division where he was recognized for bravery in combat with the Distinguished Service Cross, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Infantrymen's Badge. He returned home and received a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota, married, started a successful business and raised a family of 7 children as a 50+ year resident of Edina. Although Jim rarely spoke of his Military experience, he was extremely proud to serve his country. He remained an ardent supporter of Saint Thomas Academy, and in 1988-89 served as the National Commander of the Legion of Valor. During his many global travels and adventures, he made numerous lifelong friends. He was extremely proud of his Native American heritage and enjoyed a passion for reading and history. Jim is survived by Scott (Marie) Garberg, Jim (Cara) Garberg, Ann (Jim) Froehle, Peter (Lisa) Garberg and Tho (Mong) Tran. 12 Grandchildren and 9 Great-grandchildren. Our memories are many and we are grateful for his long and happy life. A private service will be held for the family. Washburn-McReavy.com Edina Chapel 952-920-3996
