James Allen Benson Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

James "Jim" Allen Benson, 76, of Champlin, MN, lived a life of service. He served his country, his community, and his family. Jim grew up on Pine Island, MN and graduated from Pine Island High School in 1963. Jim went on to serve honorably in the United States Navy from 1963 - 1967. He received HVAC certification and worked for Yale Mechanical for many years. He was a faithful member of the Church of St. Stephen in Anoka for over 45 years, where he could be found ushering in the balcony. Jim married Charlene on November 25, 1967 and loved her faithfully until the day he died. They traveled, worked hard, raised three children, relished being grandparents of five, and enjoyed the ups and downs of life together. They loved their life in Minnesota, but also enjoyed the over 25 winters spent in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, soaking in the sun and meeting friends. Together they invested in their community, their church, and each other. Jim was known as dad to Jennifer, Michelle, and Matthew. He was a patient, funny, supportive, and loving father. Always willing to help with a house project or give directions. He shared many life lessons, the most important being to tell those you love that you love them every day. He embraced his son-in-law, David, and daughter-in-law, Tammy, and loved and treated them as full family. Jim's favorite hobby was spending time with his grandchildren, Cooper (19), Myra (19), Riley (18), Vincent (16), and Daniel (13). He rarely missed a soccer game, lacrosse game, or a dance recital. He gave out big hugs and $20 bills. He called his grandchildren daily and learned how to group FaceTime. His love for them was unconditional and expansive. Jim loved to tell stories. He was engaging and funny. Jim made his corner of the world a better place. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to neighbors, relatives, friends, and his church community. He had a loud voice and a generous heart. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Charlene (Gaspard) Benson; his parents, Cliff and Lenora Benson; his sister, Jean Hunt; and brother, Gary Benson. He is survived by his three children, Jennifer (David), Michelle, Matthew (Tammy); his five grandchildren; his brother, Lee Benson; and many nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial for Jim will be held Friday, 6/10/22, at 11 AM with visitation one hour prior at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, 525 Jackson St., Anoka, MN.
