    Henry Bernard Messer

    October 19, 1925 - May 8, 2022

    October 19, 1925 May 8, 2022 Henry Messer, age 96, passed away May 8, 2022, surrounded by his family in Minneapolis, MN. Henry was born near West Union, MN to Katherine and Henry Messer. His family rented several farms in the West Union and Sauk Centre area. At the age of 19, Henry was drafted in the army and after going to boot camp in Texas, was sent to Japan in 1945. He spent just over a year in Japan before coming back to the U.S. and settling in Minnesota. Prior to graduating from Dunwoody College in 1952, he worked many jobs which included road construction, trapping, meat packing, and cab driving. He purchased his home in 1957 in South Minneapolis, and a year later, married his wife, Daureen. He spent 37 years working for the wholesale plumbing company, Roberts-Hamilton, managed rental properties, and retired at the age of 65. Henry worked hard all his life but cherished spending time with family and friends, reading, playing harmonica, dancing to polka music, and spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. He was an active member at St. Helena's parish, an annual MN State Fair attendee, and a regular Sunday night dinner guest. A special thank you to the ICU nurses Becky, JR, and Mitch for the care they provided. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Preceded in death by wife, Daureen; four infant children; parents, Katherine and Henry; siblings Marie, Louise, Katherine, and David. Survived by sister, Margaret Hiltner; children, Bryan (Mary) Messer and Brenda (Richard) Dziuk; grandchildren, Justine (Erik) Griep, Matthew, Angela, Rachael, Anthony, and Alec; great grandchildren, Alina, Madelyn, Zofia and Michael. Mass of Christian Burial, Friday, May 20 at 10 am, at St. Helena Catholic Church, 3204 E. 43rd St., Mpls. Visitation 1 hour prior to mass at church and Thursday, May 19 from 5-8 pm at: Washburn-McReavy Nokomis Park Chapel 1838 E. Minnehaha Pkwy, Mpls.
