Gladys Darleen Palkert

March 30, 1934 - February 3, 2022

Palkert, Gladys Darleen (neé McDonald) passed peacefully, surrounded by her children, at 87 years of age on February 3, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years Larry and sister Joyce. She is survived by 10 children - Jim (Tina), Lori Ann (Michael), Tom (Brenda), Dennis (Jana), David (Jean), Diane, Barb (Jim), Michael, Colleen (Dusty), Matt (Jess). She continuously shared her love and joy with her 27 grandchildren (one more in March) and 17 great grandchildren (2 more this Spring). Gladys, 2nd of 5 girls, was born in Heaslip, Manitoba, Canada on March 30, 1934 to George and Lena McDonald. She graduated from Daniel McIntyre high school in Winnipeg, Canada where she met her love Larry Palkert who moved in next door. They married on December 29, 1954 at St. Edward's in Winnipeg and moved to Minneapolis by way of Germany and had their first child in 1957. Family became the primary focus and joy for Gladys. She navigated family life with love, joy, and logistical genius temporarily relocating their family from the Twin Cities to California twice, and once to Sweden. In 1984, Gladys began working at Totino Grace High School in Fridley, when the youngest of her 10 started first grade. She prepared and served lunches to students and became a beloved member of the TG community until the last of her 10 children graduated. Gladys made everyone feel loved and accepted. She welcomed friends and family from around the world into her home to share a meal or enjoy one of her famous chocolate chip cookies. Gladys was an integral part of the Immaculate Conception Parish. She loved her coffee time with friends, traveling, and family time. Memorials preferred to the Alzheimer's Association. Private family wake Thursday, February 17 at Washburn-McReavy Columbia Heights Chapel. All are welcome for visitation Friday, February 18, 10am followed by 11am Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 4030 Jackson St., Columbia Heights.
