William Edward Tierney

Tierney, William Edward Known to all as Bill, passed away peacefully Monday morning April 6, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. He was 94. He was the patriarch of the Tierney family. Married 69 years to the love of his life, Marilyn. He raised 6 children and served as the spiritual adviser to 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He taught them all what true unconditional love was all about, the importance of enthusiasm, the value of integrity and how to bait a hook. He was born and raised in Minneapolis, attended West High School and was a veteran of WWII. He began his professional life as a salesman canvassing the Great Plains selling health care products and chewing tobacco to every drug store in his path. He honed the concept of relationship selling and became a personal friend to every druggist in his territory. In time, he would shift from health products to photo finishing services that eventually led to a Sr. Executive role at Pako Photo Corporation. He closed out his career at the company founded bytwo of his sons, Tierney Brothers Inc.; where he served as a sales consultant and senior advisor for nearly 20 years. Bill was a devoted catholic who attended daily mass. He was an active member of his church, St. Thomas the Apostle and participated in leadership roles with his church community. He organized and participated in volunteer activities including Loaves and Fishes, Branch Lunch, the Cookie Cart. He was an avid student of History, a serious golfer who achieved a "hole in one" at the age of 91, and a skilled fisherman with more stories than fish. The place he loved most was his lake home on Sugar Lake in Maple Lake, MN where his family gathered for 55 years. Bill's whole life was focused on raising his family and Sugar Lake gave him the gathering place where he could spend one on one time with children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. All who survive him remember fondly those times and the subtle and sometime not so subtle advise and wisdom he imparted to the clan. He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn, his younger brother Mike Tierney (Nancy), and sister-in-law, Joanne Tierney, his children, Tom Tierney (Paula), Mark Tierney, Molly Tierney Schomburg, Jim Tierney (Maura), Bill Tierney (Dee Dee) and Katy Anderson (Glen), his grandchildren; Melissa (Brian), Scott (Trish), Ryan, Sara, Dustin, O'Neill, Maeve, John, Patrick, Michael, (Shannon), Colin, (Nora), Ben, Molly, Joe, Claire, and eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his younger brother Paul and his sister-in-law Marvel McPhee. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 10th at the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle located at 2914 West 44th St., Minneapolis. Visitation will be held at 10:00 am prior to service. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle or Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital Hospice.
