William J.D. Murphy

Murphy, William J.D. of Edina, MN, and Naples, FL, died peacefully at home February 17, 2014. Preceded in death and looking forward to seeing beloved wife, Mary McKeon, as well as parents Edmund and Anna Murphy, and four siblings: Bud, Mary, Ed and Patricia. Born in Jamestown, ND, Bill happily recalled his time there as having only needed a bike to know everyone in town ~ and he did. His family sold their lumber business and moved near Detroit Lakes, MN when he was a young teen, and he valued lifelong friendships made while living there. With his older sisters holding Master's Degrees, his parents focused next on Bill's education, sending him from northern MN down to board at St. Thomas Academy for high school. He loved it there, and after serving in the Navy, made the Twin Cities his home. He attended the University of Minnesota, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity and met his future wife, Mary. They wed in 1951, and went on to raise six children and experience life's joys and challenges together for 61 years, until Mary's death in 2012. She credited Bill for bringing her years of laughter, and was his biggest fan. As a young husband and father, Bill started Business Forms and Systems, Inc., a company that would span his entire career. He eventually sold the business to what is now Allina Health Systems. Bill spent many years at the family cabin, as well as playing tennis, golf and cheering on his kids' activities. He was generous and involved over the years with many civic organizations, was a former board member of St Mary's Hospital, a member of Royal Poinciana CC in Naples, and a 40-year member of lnterlachen Country Club. His presence will be missed by many loving friends, and his family, including children, Jim (Janet), Molly, David, Martha (Kelly), Anne (Pat) Olk and Tom; grandson, Tommy Olk and granddaughters, Katie Murphy, Abby Murphy and Megan Olk sister-in-law, and brother-in-law, Dr. S. Robert and Tricia Maxeiner; nieces, nephews and cousins. A Visitation will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, March 1 at St. Patrick's Church in Edina followed by a Memorial Mass at 11:00.
