William Boyd Bunes

William "Bill" Bunes, age 80, passed away peacefully on November 26th, 2023 surrounded by family. Bill was born the youngest of seven children to Judith and Peter Bunes in San Francisco, CA on October 1st, 1943. He served in the Army where he spent a year proudly defending our country in Vietnam, and then moved back to Minnesota in 1967 where he met and fell in love with Sandra Mohler. They were married in 1969 and started their family a couple years later. They lived in Taconite, MN and had 3 children, Jason, Chad, and Becky. The family moved to the Northern Minneapolis suburbs where Bill gained employment at the University of Minnesota where he remained a loyal employee for 30 years until retirement in 2016. The family enjoyed many wonderful camping trips together throughout the years. Bill was actively involved as a father and would often bring the kids out in the family boat during the camping trips to enjoy tubing and knee boarding. He was the biggest supporter of any of the kids' activities. Bill and his brother-in-law, Willy, shared the same passion for music and played together for many years. Bill would often bring his guitar out at family gatherings to strum a tune. He was the most selfless, kindest, funniest, loyal, and caring guy you'd ever meet. A true example of "give the shirt off his back," kind of guy. Preceded in death by his father Peter, mother Judith, brothers Denny, Lorry, and Digger, and sister Yvonne. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Sandy, his 3 children Jason (Deanna) Bunes, Chad (Bobby) Bunes, and Becky (Ryan) Utsch, 10 grandchildren (Jason) Jojo, Jaxson, and Oakley, (Chad) Katlynn and Austin, and (Becky) Cody, Ayden, Ava, Isaac, and Asher, 2 great-grandchildren (Katlynn) Nolan and Jack, brother Bud (Jean) Bunes, and sister Joyce. And Bill and Sandy's beloved dog Pippa who was always near. Services will be held at Washburn-McReavy on December 8th, 2023 at 10:30am; visitation at 9:30am. There will be a small reception held afterwards at the VFW next door, in which you are warmly invited. An honors ceremony will take place at Fort Snelling at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Autism Speaks (AutismSpeaks.org), a cause Bill felt strongly about.
