Warren Moffitt

Moffitt, Warren K. age 91, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2012. Warren was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Virginia J. Moffitt. His family brought him great pride, love and joy and was the most important element of his life. He is survived by his children, Barbara and Sheldon Braaten and Jim and Candy Moffitt. Also surviving are the grandchildren he adored, Melissa Knoll, John and Ann Lewensten, Michael and Erin Moffitt and Sarah Moffitt. He was preceded in death by grandson-in-law, Gregory Knoll. Bringing the joy and excitement to his later years, were great-grandchildren, Neva and Morgan Knoll, Carter and William Lewensten, Tobias and Josephine Moffitt. Warren spent his childhood on a farm near Rock Island, Illinois. After high school he worked for a short time before enlisting in the Army. He was sent to the Pentagon and assigned to the 17th Signal Service. He was sent to Moscow where he was a cryptographer. He was an excellent cryptographer and deciphered secret codes with mechanical devices, many for Gen. George Marshall and President Roosevelt. He returned to Rock Island and worked for J. I. Case Company, and married Virginia J. Karr. In 1957, Warren and Virginia moved to Edina, MN where they raised their family. Warren and Virginia were exemplary parents whose dedication to their children continued to give love and attention to grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Each of us has strong memories of the many ways they cared for their family. We all recognized how fortunate we were to have had such remarkable parents and a close family. Warren and Virginia moved to Waverly Gardens (Presbyterian Homes) in 2006. The family recognizes the staff and residents there who provided care, compassion and joy to Warren. He was especially fond of the breakfast crew and Debbie, who provided a listening ear and conversation. We appreciate all that they did for him. A memorial service will be held at Waverly Gardens during the summer. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Children's Home Society in St. Paul or the Presbyterian Homes Foundation.
