Waldo David Lundgren

Waldo David Lundgren was born July 9, 1915 at 1713 Jefferson Street in North Minneapolis, the fourth son of David and Agna. In 1920 they moved into a nine room home at 2004 22nd Avenue NE, where he attended Pillsbury grade school and Edison High School. After faithfully attending high school reunions for many years, he finally became the last surviving member of his class. During his growing up years, his father built musical instruments and Waldo was blessed with a wonderful voice. After high school in 1932 during the height of the depression, he was one of only three young men given a bank messenger job at First National Bank and worked at the St. Anthony Falls branch. He continued to live at home and help his Mom. He found the Lord as his Savior during evangelistic sermons at Salem Covenant Church. After ten years with the bank, WWII broke out and his was the second number to be picked for the draft. As a member of the Field Artillery Medical Corp, he spent most of his time with the Army in Ireland as a dental assistant. He received a medical discharge in 1942, and spent time in Dresser, Wisconsin with his Grandmother. Waldo began his career with the railroad laying track and building bridges for Northern Pacific and then spent 30 years with the Soo Line. At age 37, in 1951, Waldo married Ruth Smart. There were no children added in this union but they enjoyed many nieces and nephews, especially the grandchildren of Ruth’s sister Merle, who lived with them for more than ten years. Waldo retired in 1978. Waldo’s gift of the love of music led him to a second love – Helen Knee. Marrying Helen in 1989, Waldo inherited a large family and became known as David, most often answering to the name Grandpa Dave. Together Dave and Helen lived in New Brighton, Blaine and Mora. In 2013 he moved to Maranatha Commons, the place where he, Helen and Leslie, Helen’s first husband, led worship services together many years ago. Waldo David was loved for his kindness, his generosity, helpfulness and humor (with long stories). Everyone will miss him much. Waldo David was preceded in death by his wives, Ruth and Helen, his parents, his brother Allan, Leonard, Royal and Donald and sister, Verna, as well as, recently, his beloved daughter-in-law, Colleen. He is survived by his sister Lorraine and his stepchildren, Sondra Arntsen, Stanley Knee, Rev. Lark d’Helen, Ed Knee, Steven Knee, Deborah Baxter and their families. He is also survived by dear nieces and nephews of his marriage to Ruth Smart. Dave considered himself a blessed man. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Blessed is the Name of the Lord.
