Viola Rynchek Smetana

Smetana, Viola Rynchek "Vicky" Age 92, formerly of Mpls., passed away peacefully Jan. 10, 2018. Born in Minneapolis to Alexander and Anna Rynchek. Graduate of West High School, member of Tri Psi Sorority and VFW Auxiliary. Preceded in death by husband, Angus; sisters, Barbara (Harold) March, Evelyn (Robert) Ogilvie, Sylvia (Elmer) Schlueter; brothers, Lawrence, Louis (Janice) and Irving Rynchek; in-laws, William (Mary) Smetana. Survived by children, Teresa (Duane) Gasser, Gregory (Martha) Smetana, Marlene (Chuck) Smith and Kendrick Smetana (Lisa Swanson); four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; in-laws, Esther (Don) Giesel, Jane McDonald and Carolyn Rynchek; many nieces, nephews, loving and caring friends. Viola was a very creative and artistic person who shared her talents in many different ways. She was a seamstress who designed and sewed clothes and costumes for herself and her children, a floral designer who made unique centerpieces for special occasions, and a cake decorator who had a flair for making beautiful cakes for events in the lives of those close to her. She was a wonderful homemaker who took pride in her cooking and baking. When her children were growing up she always had a garden and canned her own fruits and vegetables. She also took on leadership roles in the PTA, the VFW Auxiliary, and Tri Psi Sorority. In her free time she loved listening to music. Whether it be a live performance such as an opera or symphony concert or recordings. She saw the importance of having music and the arts in her life and always encouraged others to pursue their artistic interests. She never forgot her friends and family members on their birthdays and on holidays. Many times she would create her own cards to give or send to them on such occasions to let them know she was thinking of them. Mass of Christian Burial 3:00 PM Friday, Jan. 12, with visitation starting at 1:00 PM at St. Gabriel the Archangel - St. Joseph Campus, 1310 Mainstreet, Hopkins. Private interment Fort Snelling.
