Thomas Alan Schomaker

Thomas (Tom) Alan Schomaker, of Woodbury, MN, passed away unexpectedly from a cardiac emergency on March 11, 2023. Tom was born January 11, 1941, to Benedict John and Dorothy Marie (Soule) Schomaker in Bertha, Minnesota. He married Dorothy Marie Trapp on September 7, 1968. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benedict and Dorothy Schomaker; sisters-in-law, Kay Trapp and Judy Schomaker and brother in-law, Harry Johnson. Tom is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, David (Heidi) Schomaker and Jill (Seth) Binau; grandchildren, Sam, Sydney, Leah, Ashley and Kayley; brothers, Fred (Jan) and Larry Schomaker; sister, Carol (Greg) Anderson; sister in-law, Rosemary Johnson; brothers in-law, Don (Faith), Dick (Jane) and Dave (Mary Jo) Trapp; nieces, nephews and friends. Tom attended Humboldt High School, graduating in 1959. After high school, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Navy on September 25, 1961, where he served on the USS John S. McCain as a radarman and petty officer. After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, Tom enrolled at the University of Minnesota where he studied transportation and logistics at the Carlson School. It was during his time at the University of Minnesota, in 1966, that Tom met the love of his life, Dorothy. He earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in 1971. Upon graduating, Tom was hired at Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M) which was the beginning of a 30-year career building the International Supply Chain for 3M. As he ascended in rank and tenure with the company, his positions took him and his family across the globe, with multi-year stays in each of Belgium, The Netherlands, and China. Over his career, Tom had the opportunity to visit over 80 different countries and would always talk about the wonderful people he met from all over the globe. He retired from 3M in 2001. In retirement, Tom focused on the things that brought him immense joy. Family, golfing, fishing, vacationing, Minnesota sports, his pick 'em contests, and most of all watching his grandchildren pursue their academic and athletic dreams. A fixture at every school or athletic event he could possibly attend, Tom loved to cheer on his children and grandchildren and support them without fail. Of Tom's many passions, none could top his love for his immediate and extended family. He loved family gatherings, family dinners, family game nights, family golf outings, and family boat trips. His strong faith in God, and his love for his family and country were guiding beacons for us all. It was clear that Tom was his happiest when he could share his personal joys with those he loved the most, his family. Tom was an extraordinarily engaged and dedicated father to David and Jill; their accomplishments and character made him most proud. He was a devoted husband of 54 years to his dearest love, Dorothy. His happiness and completeness were always on display throughout their lives together. We will all miss Tom's eternally optimistic outlook, his room-lightening smile, his ability to captivate an audience with a story, the taste of his perfectly grilled steaks, his innate ability to make everyone feel welcome, and his insatiable appetite for love, laughter, and life. Memorial Service 11 AM Friday March 17th (visitation 10-11AM) at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 1583 Radio Dr., Woodbury. Interment Elmhurst Cemetery. Memorials to donor's choice.
