Thomas Raymond Lang

Lang, Thomas Raymond age 86, of Mpls, passed away May 26, after suffering a stroke on May 14. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Electa; his sister, Pat Hurd; his daughters, Candace Lang (Bob Treumann), Diane (Larry) Carrington, Debbie (Jeff) Mulligan and Terri Lang (Brad Turner); his son, Bruce (Marilyn) Feldman; 10 grandchildren & 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Carol Sweeten. Tom was born in Oak Park, IL and grew up in the Chicago suburbs of Oak Park and River Forest. He attended Fenwick High School before transferring to Culver Military Academy. He then went on to attend Cornell University for one year before enlisting in the US Army. He spent his tour of duty at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as a Medic. He then returned to Cornell University where he met his future wife (Electa Jenne) in German class; his first word to her were, "Haben Sie einen Fullfeder-halter?" ("Do you have a fountain pen?") Tom and Electa were married on January 1, 1949. They raised five daughters and helped raise four foster children while Tom worked as a successful salesman. They started their married life in upstate New York, but spent the majority of their time in Clarendon Hills, a suburb of Chicago, where Tom was a member of the local Lions Club and the Presbyterian Church. He was a marathon runner - he started running at the age of 50. He ran in seven marathons. In their retirement years, Tom and Electa were members of the Sierra Club and climbed many mountains, as well, they joined Elder Hostel and traveled around the United States and to other countries. Tom will be remembered for his generosity, as well as his sense of adventure; he was constantly searching to learn more about the world, to try new things, pushing himself and pushing to see what was over the next hill. Memorial service will be Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 2:00 PM with visitation starting at 1:00 PM at the Washburn-McReavy Davies Chapel, 2301 Dupont Ave S., Mpls, MN 55403. Private burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. A Celebration of his life will be held immediately after the service at the Kenwood Retirement Community, 825 Summit Ave., Mpls, MN 55403.
