Thomas G. Kamp

Kamp, Thomas G. Tom was born July 22, 1925 in Dearborn, Michigan to James and Frances Kamp, immigrants from The Netherlands. He served as a fighter direction officer on the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II. He studied at Middlebury College and Columbia University, and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1949 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Also in 1949, he married Janette Schermer and they were happily married for over 67 years at the time of his death. Tom joined General Motors in Milwaukee, followed by Lear Corporation in Grand Rapids, and moved to Minneapolis in 1956 to join Honeywell. The following year (1957), he joined a small firm which was soon acquired by the newly formed Control Data Corporation. He rose to become President of the Peripheral Products Company with operations in 19 countries and over 21,000 team members, later being named Vice Chairman of Control Data Corporation. Upon retirement from Control Data in 1985, he went on to serve as Chairman and CEO of Centronics Data Computer Corporation, non-Executive Chairman of Rodime plc in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Chairman and CEO of Premier Computer Corporation. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Tom was active in serving his church, Calvary Christian Reformed Church, and other church-related institutions, including serving on the boards of Minnehaha Academy, Elim Christian School in Chicago, and Reformed Bible College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Next to his faith and his family, Tom's greatest interest was flying. He earned his private pilot's license in 1968 followed by instrument and multi-engine ratings. He accumulated over 5,000 hours of pilot in command time over twenty years of flying. He was also an avid tennis player, fisherman, hunter, and skier. Tom is survived by his wife, Janette; children Jennifer Tretheway, Pamela Martinson, Thomas Kamp, and Nancy Ringling; ten grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his siblings: Dr. John Kamp, Frances Terpstra, Dr. James Kamp, and Dr. Hani Chalmers.
