Terence J. Quigley

Terence J. "Terry" Quigley, 85, of Shoreview, MN, passed away on Thursday, January 13th, 2022, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. He is survived by his wife, Kay, brother Brian (Evelyn), sisters Mary Donovan and Kate Kielsmeier (Joe), sons Steve (Terry), Doug (Jane), Bill (Sherry), and Kevin, daughter Sue Penders (Kevin), grandsons Joe, Jack, and Sam Penders, Ryan, Matt, and John Quigley, and granddaughters Erin Godfrey (Patrick), Julia, Michaela, Kate, Laura, Jess, Britt, Maya, and Grace Quigley. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Julia (Riley), brother Mike, and son Mike. Terry was born April 29, 1936, in Duluth, MN. His father worked for the railroad, a job that took the family to Chicago in 1944 and then to St. Paul in 1950. He graduated from Washington High School in 1954 and started working for Deluxe Check Printers in St. Paul in 1957. After a two-year break for military service, he returned to Deluxe in 1961 where he remained until he retired in 1995, having spent 39 years with the company. While at Deluxe, he worked his way from press operator, sales correspondent, plant manager of two plants, and was named Vice President of Human Resources in 1974, a position he held at retirement. The richness of Terry's life only grew in retirement. He had a passion for public service and a commitment to helping those fighting long odds against the system. He was a Guardian Ad Litem for the 2nd Judicial District, a Reading Mentor in District 621, State Chair for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserves, and the Director of Junior Achievement of Minnesota. He volunteered his time with St. Odilia church to help find jobs for the unemployed. He was active in a number of environmental causes including the Wildlife Science Center in Forest Lake and the Minnesota Planning Agency Environmental Quality Board. He served the city of Shoreview for almost 50 years, starting on the planning commission in 1973 and moving on to various roles before being appointed to the city council in 2001, a seat he held until his passing. Terry met Kay Sanford in 1958 while she was working for Minnesota Mutual in St. Paul, and they married in 1959. They moved to Shoreview in 1971 where they created a loving and happy home for their six children. Together they enjoyed playing and watching tennis, taking walks (which often involved a stroller), and traveling to warm weather destinations. Terry made it clear over the years that Kay's selfless dedication to him and the family played a major role in his success. They recently celebrated 62 years of marriage, and he loved her dearly. Terry had an endlessly inquiring mind, deep commitment to family and community, rich sense of humor, and an unwavering set of principles that guided him throughout his long and accomplished life. Private services were held. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.
