Tadd Rick Tuomie

Tadd Rick Tuomie passed away at the age of 62 in Minneapolis on the afternoon of February 1, 2026 after complications from a heart attack. He was given an Honor Walk through the ICU to an operating room where the halls were lined with hospital staff and his family and friends. His wife of 38 years, Jodi, was by his side as he took his last breath, moments before he gave life-saving gifts as an organ donor to three complete strangers. Tadd was a lover of sport and adventure, often combining the two. At thirteen, he played on a baseball team that traveled to Japan and was in New York City for a tournament at the time of the famous blackout of 1977. He was a multi-sport athlete in high school and was also involved in theatre. Tadd played hockey at the collegiate level at Notre Dame for the Irish. At the age of twenty-four, he met his wife, Jodi, while he played hockey for the Mohawk Valley Comets in upstate New York. He proposed on a night of a Blue Moon. They married and moved with their son, Royal, to Hassfurt, Germany, where their adventures continued. While playing, coaching, and driving the Zamboni for ERC Hassfurt Eishockey club, he found time to work for an industrial tubing manufacturer based in the Mainfranken region of Germany. His travels for work took him to places like Taiwan, Japan, and China; he visited ancient temples, rode in rickshaws, and saw the Great Wall of China. A lover of music, he brought home bootlegged cassette tapes that sometimes did not live up to the expected original recording quality. In Germany, he visited medieval castles, nearby gothic-era churches, and he witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall. He chiseled out graffitied pieces that he saved. Friends and family came to visit, staying with them in their small apartment which kept an open-door policy, often the basecamp for the grand adventures of others. Tadd and Jodi had three more children, Taylor, Hanna, and Jack, while living in Germany. They moved back to Minnesota in 1995 to be closer to family. He made life-long friendships in Hassfurt and last visited in November 2025. He was a familiar face around Twin Cities hockey rinks-a coach, a skate-sharpener, a ringer at pick-up hockey games, and a referee. He coached countless teams at all levels, teaching hundreds of young children how to skate, coaching in the High School Elite League, inventing many mini-games, and asking all to "play hard, play fair, and have fun". In his lifetime, he drove a limo, a Zamboni, Vespa scooter, a blue Saab convertible, and a decommissioned Metro Mobility bus. One of those for a paycheck, all of them for pleasure. Some may have seen him as unconventional, maybe eccentric even, but he was unabashedly authentic. Later in life, he developed a stronger interest in the natural world, planting cherry, pear and apple trees in his yard, he was the first person to have a cat on his lap at a family gathering, and even hand-fed squirrels that would visit him while he worked in his garage. He was a devoted grandfather, maintaining a pool in the summers that he rarely swam in, attending choir concerts and dance recitals, and reading many books to his grandchildren Isabell (Hanna), Rubi, and Ezra (Taylor and Jessica). He was always learning, always curious, always sharing the knowledge he gained. He was a voice of reason and could make every situation better. He was a skilled listener, a lover of stories, and a giver of unmatched hugs. Tadd brought out the best in others. He will be missed dearly by his wife, his four children and their spouses, his parents, brother, four sisters, three grandchildren, his in-laws, many cousins, nephews and nieces and countless dear friends. He left the world in the same way he approached life, with a courageous heart. A memorial service will be held at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Mounds View, Minnesota on February 27, 2026. Visitation will begin at 10 am, the memorial service will start at 11 am. All are welcome to celebrate Tadd's life and honor his memory.
