Susan Haviland McCulloch

McCulloch, Susan King Haviland 3/16/16 - 10/29/10 Beloved, gracious and devoted daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and cherished friend, passed away gracefully and peacefully on 10/29/10 after a courageous struggle with a long illness. Ms. McCulloch was born in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. She was an active sister in the sorority Sigma Sigma Sigma, Omicron Chapter during her years there. Following gradation she taught elementary education in Mount Clemens, and Ypsilanti, Michigan for 3 years. She then married Rudolph McCulloch and did research with Dr. Douglas Sprunt at Duke University while her husband was in medical school. In her later years she worked in the library archives of Eastern Michigan University until her retirement in 1976. While a resident in Ypsilanti, Michigan, she was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Beyer Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Ypsilanti Women's Literary Club and volunteer at the Ypsilanti Thrift Shop which provided donations to the community. She moved to Edina after retirement, to be closer to her family and was an active member of the Women's Club of Minneapolis. She was a tennis champion in her early years in Detroit and Ypsilanti, and continued to play locally in Edina. She was preceded in death by her father, John Haviland; mother, Ellen Wortley Haviland Longnecker; step father, Alexander Longnecker; and former husband, Dr. Rudolph Powers McCulloch. She is survived by her brother, John Haviland; devoted son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Joseph and M. Kathryn McCulloch; devoted and beloved grandchildren, Michael Alexander (Stephanie), Sarah Haviland (Kris) and Mary Caitlin Marc; adored great-grandchildren, Oskar Rudolph, Ingrid Haviland (Sarah and Kris), and yet to be announced great-grandchild of Michael and Stephanie. Also survived by nephews, John and Robert Haviland and their families. A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, 11/14/10 from 1-4 PM at the McCulloch residence. Please call for directions.
