Sufia Khatoon Babar

Our dearly loved Sufia Khatoon Durrett Babar entered into eternal rest on January 8th, 2024 at 70 years of age. She was born on July 21, 1953 in Detroit MI and was the firstborn of four children. Her parents were Ambbia Khatoon Uddin Finley and Willie Arie Durrett. Sufia, a woman unwaveringly devoted to her children, had a deep impact on her family and all those around her. Her hospitality was unmatched, and she made everyone feel welcome in her home with feasts, even when finances were tight. She had a talent for creating beauty out of very little, and her love for art, gardening, and singing was evident. She had a very generous spirit, especially when it came to her eight grandchildren. Sufia graduated from Mumford High School, Detroit MI in 1971. She was married to Raza Ali Babar Bokhari in 1974, and they had 3 children. Having gained the appreciation of higher education from her mother, she obtained her BS in Financial Management and an MA in Business Management from the College of St. Scholastica. Throughout her life, she volunteered for many non-profits and church organizations. Sufia loved relaxing with a hot cup of tea, and she leaves her dreams of having a house of tea café for her family. Having hosted several art exhibits, Sufia's artwork was spontaneous and insightful. You could always find paint and canvas around her. Her love for beauty was also found in her constant care of her garden of flowers and vegetables. Sufia spoke her mind plainly, and her singing and smile lit up a room. Her joy spilled out in songs at the crack of dawn, as her children can attest, and in her younger years, she was rumored to burn up the dance floor with her fancy moves. Sufia's faith journey can be summed up in her steadfast trust in God in all seasons. Despite her health challenges (overcoming multiple iterations of cancer and kidney failure, among others), she clung to the Lord as her Shepherd. Her kindness, compassion, generosity, service, and humility were a reflection of deeply held principles as a follower of Christ. She firmly believed in the mercy of God on her life and has lived her life as a testimony of God's grace. Throughout her journey, she instilled in her children the importance of serving others as a light of God's love, and to use their talents to make a positive impact. Her presence will be greatly missed, but her legacy of love and service will live on in the hearts of all those who knew her. Preceding her in death were her mother and father, stepfather Robert L. Finley Sr., sister Rabia Khatoon Byrd, and sister Katijah Khatoon Durrett. She leaves to cherish her memories, daughter Azra Y. Babar Weber (John D. Weber), son Imran Ali Babar (Ivy G. Babar nee Gillette), daughter Amenah A. Babar Agunwamba (Akochi O. Agunwamba); father of her children Raza A. Babar Bokhari; eight grandchildren, Sarah, Elianna, Amara, Nadia, Aviyah, Ilias, Leilani, and Abigail; brother, Robert Landus Finley Jr.; nieces Sufia Shawntila Jones (Quincy Jones) and Maria Elizabeth Robertson (Steve Robertson); and a host of aunts, cousins, and friends.
