Stephen Mark Awker

Stephen Mark Awker June 13, 1957- July 13, 2026 Stephen Mark Awker, of New Brighton, MN, passed away July 13th 2026 after a short, but courageous battle with cancer. He was 69 years old. Born June 13, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois to Philip Merl Awker Sr. and Phyllis Marlene Plants, Steve was the third of eight children. Stephen is survived by his wife of 39 years, Marya Awker; children Rebecca (Chad) Botts, Trevor (Heather) Awker, and Peter (Amy) Awker; 7 grandchildren, Tony, Morgan, James, Mackenzie, Malin, Easton, and Nolan; his faithful beagle Minnie; 7 siblings, Phil Awker Jr, David Awker, Bill Awker, Chuck Awker, Cindy Clow, Lisa Reynolds, and Tina Westawker, along with many nieces and nephews. Steve worked for Coca Cola for 35 years as a member of Teamsters local 792. After retiring from Coca Cola, Steve worked for Ramsey County at the various compost sites, greeting and organizing brush and grass disposal with residents. He brought his dog Minnie to work with him. Together, they welcomed residents and assisted them with whatever they needed. They were much loved by members of the community, and often recognized when walking at the neighborhood Hansen Park as "Steve from the compost sites and Minnie." Steve was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles for many years volunteering at New Brighton Stockyard days. During the week he could be found in the afternoon, playing Tuesday bingo, sometimes even winning. Family was at the center of everything Steve did. Growing up in a big family, Steve never lacked for companionship. He enjoyed shooting pool with his brothers and his dad, playing cards with different siblings, and sneaking off to Cubs games. Later, as an adult, for several years, along with his wife, he hosted an annual family reunion for his wife's side of the family on Labor Day weekend, that signaled the end of summer. His Halloween games antics were the talk of the neighborhood- kids had to earn their treats, but they had fun doing it. He enjoyed fishing up north at the trailer he owned when the children were younger, and spent many hours on the lake, some of the hours trying to find his way back home since he often tended to wander where the fish were and get lost. Once the children grew up, he began staying closer to home, taking care of his home and yard, along with enjoying grandchildren. They would laugh when he would magically find coins behind their ears. He was often seen chatting with his neighbors over the fence, or sitting on the deck reading the newspaper with his faithful companion Minnie. Steve will be missed by everyone who knew him. He touched a lot of lives and made a difference. A funeral service will be held Monday, August 3rd at 11 am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in New Brighton, 835 2nd Avenue NW, with visitation one hour prior to service. Memorials preferred to donor's favorite charity.
