Stephan Chester Grygar

Stephan Grygar, 74, of Corcoran, MN passed away surrounded by his family on August 5, 2026 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Steve was born April 25, 1952, in Minneapolis, MN, to Chester and Delores Grygar, their only child. He grew up in St. Anthony Village, graduated from De La Salle High School, then the University of Minnesota with a degree in Accounting. Steve's connection to the University of Minnesota began in high school, when he took a job washing dishes there, the start of a professional relationship that would span more than three decades. After graduating, he joined the University of Minnesota Hospital's Finance department, where one of his proudest achievements was helping secure the funding to build the new University Hospital, known at the time as Unit J and today as East Bank Hospital. From there, Steve moved to Fairview as Director of Finance, later becoming Chief Financial Officer of Fairview Ebenezer, a role he held for more than a decade until his retirement in 2015. During his tenure, the organization opened multiple new facilities, each made possible in part by the financial groundwork he laid. Steve was a man of faith who enjoyed his daily devotionals and sharing stories of his altar boy days and run-ins with the nuns. He served on many non-profit boards throughout his life and enjoyed music (especially the Beach Boys and Eagles), Star Trek, and history. He took great pride in his yard, running a strict mowing schedule and treating "best-looking yard on the block" as a title worth defending. He loved throwing a football in the backyard, dancing with his daughters in the living room, and, true to his profession, never missed a chance to talk finance, including a running family tradition of quarterly portfolio check-ins where he always made his case for buying gold. Steve is survived by his children, Shaun of Dover, AR, Libby (Thomas) Schulzetenberg of Maple Grove, MN, and Sarah of Minneapolis, MN; his granddaughter Eleanor, who held a special place in his heart; and his former wife Carolyn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Delores Grygar. Funeral service to be held 1:00 PM Monday, Aug. 10, with visitation 30 minutes prior at: Washburn-McReavy Hillside Chapel 19th Ave. N.E.
