Sandra Jean Sandstrom

Sandra Jean "Sandi" Sandstrom passed away peacefully in her home on May 23, 2023 surrounded by her family. Sandi was born in Minneapolis Minnesota on April 17, 1940 to Joyce and Alvin Benson. She was the oldest child and big sister to James "Jim" Benson, Sharon Benson Hauge and Marilyn Benson Filipek. She grew up in South Minneapolis and met the love of her life, Clifford "Cliff" Sandstrom on the tennis courts at Brackett Field near their childhood homes. They were married on June 24, 1960 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and experienced many milestone moments together in their sixty-three years of marriage. Sandi and Cliff had four children; Clifford P. Sandstrom, Laurie Sandstrom Pipkin, Thomas Sandstrom (Laura) and Steven Sandstrom (Jennifer.) They have eight grandchildren; Stephanie Sandstrom, Amanda Sandstrom Hanson (Erik), Tim Sandstrom, Carley Hendren, Nevada Sanchez (Ashley), Rainah Sandstrom Miqueli (Jude), Adrianna Bollweg and Shaw Sandstrom. They were also blessed with eight great-grandchildren. Sandra was a great sportswoman. She was an avid bowler and tennis player, enjoying many years in women's leagues in both sports. She was an experienced skier, and enjoyed both downhill and cross-country days on the slopes with family and friends. She and Cliff also golfed together, and played many beautiful courses throughout their travels. For several years Sandi and Cliff made New Mexico their home, a period that sparked interest in Native American culture and history. Together they garnered a collection of Southwestern art and pottery. Kachina dolls were of special interest. Sandi had a very artistic eye, and in addition to raising her family she worked for several companies where her artistic talents could be displayed. She was an interior designer specializing in tile and textiles, and also helped many families find the perfect piece of art or furniture for their homes. Sandi will be remembered for her beautiful blue eyes and bright smile. She loved fashion and had a great sense of style. She had a wonderful sharp wit, an infectious laugh and beautiful singing voice. She sang in the Christ the King Lutheran Church choir for many years and was always humming and singing. She also enjoyed gardening; planting her favorite annuals each year and then caring for them all summer. She loved a good burger, strong black coffee and of most of all her family. Sandi was predeceased by her parents, Alvin and Joyce and her brother James. She is survived by her husband Cliff, all four of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and sisters Marilyn and Sharon. There will be a Memorial Service at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis at a date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, Sandi would have appreciated donations to a charity of your choice.
