Sandra Ruth Chelgren

Chelgren, Sandra R. "Sandy" (Damkroger) Age 82 of Shoreview died peacefully surrounded by her family on January 4, 2023. Sandy grew up on the East Side of St. Paul and graduated from Johnson High School before going on to earn her teaching degree at the University of Minnesota. She was an elementary school classroom teacher for 10 years, eight of which were at Pinewood Elementary in Mounds View Public Schools. She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Alice Damkroger. She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Dick, and by children Chris (Karen) and Sarah (Brian) Duffy and grandchildren Myles Chelgren, Peter and Benjamin Duffy. Also survived by cousin Rich Nelson and many loving nieces, nephews, other relatives, and lifelong friends. Sandy was devoted to her family and friends. She dedicated her time to raising Chris and Sarah when they were growing up, and she became a beloved neighborhood mom to many of their friends over the years. She loved to host large family gatherings at their home on Turtle Lake where she would serve her legendary bean dip. Sandy enjoyed taking pontoon rides around the lake, feeding the local birds, and chatting with neighbors. Sandy loved her many dogs over the years, especially her airedale terriers Sasha, George, Daisy, Charlie, and Ralph. Her grandsons were a source of tremendous joy and pride for her, and they will miss her dearly. Further from home, Sandy kept a special place in her heart for the Seattle area after she and Dick lived there for two years when they were first married and Dick was stationed at Fort Lewis in Tacoma. Two of her favorite places to visit were 7 Mile Beach on Grand Cayman and Lutsen Resort on the North Shore of Lake Superior. She enjoyed taking cruises to the Caribbean whenever possible. Sandy and her daughter Sarah enjoyed many special trips together over the years, including a once-in-a-lifetime cruise to the Mediterranean in 2009. Sandy was known for her great sense of humor and she will be missed by many. Thank you to the wonderful staff at St. John's and Regions Hospitals who provided great care and comfort for Sandy and the family on her final day. Funeral service 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 11, 2023 (Visitation 10:00 - 11:00 AM) at Holcomb-Henry-Boom-Purcell Funeral Home (515 Hwy 96 W., Shoreview). Interment Roselawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Audubon Society or a charity of your choice.
