Ruth (Tjossem) Olson

Olson, Ruth Ann (Tjossem) Was delivered to God's loving arms on August 22nd, 2006, after a courageous seven year battle with breast cancer. Born in Lawrenz, Iowa, on January 19, 1925, to parents Ray and Clara Tjossem, she eventually moved to Virginia, Minnesota. Ruth started her life of socialization and goodwill when she invited every girl in her 6th grade class to dinner during the course of the school year. Attending high school in Virginia, Minnesota and Washburn, she graduated from U High and kept up her relationships with several of her high school classmates to date. Ruth was very active in 4-H. She attended the University of Minnesota where she graduated with a degree in Home Economics. Originally working in Chicago, she eventually took a job as the County Home Economist for Dakota County. She met her husband, Dr. Phil Olson, and redirected her life towards volunteerism and the game of golf. She was the president of several hospital and medical society auxiliaries. Ruth was also President of the Minnesota Women's Golf Association and General Chairman of the 1977 Women's U.S. Open Golf Championship. Between Hazeltine National Golf Club and Eastlake Woodlands Golf Club, she won 21 club championships. She had a long standing relationship with the USGA rules committees, ruling at golf tournaments and instructing newcomers to the game on appropriate etiquette and rules. She was a real lady of the game, as she was in life. Her accomplishments led to the re-naming of the Hazeltine Women's Club Championship to the Ruth Olson Women's Club Championship. Always friendly and kind with an outgoing nature, Ruth developed friendships wherever she went and had a great number of admirers. Preceded in death by husband, Dr. Phil Olson, brother Jack Tjossem, and parents Ray and Clara Tjossem. Survived by son Paul Olson (Elizabeth), son Phil Olson, daughter Randi Olson, and grandson Paul Olson. We wish to express our sincerest thanks to the Auburn Manor staff for their outstanding care, attention, and love. Visitation Thurs. from 6-8pm at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at Washburn McReavy Chapel on Fri. August 25th at 10am, located at 7625 Mitchell Rd., Eden Prairie, MN 55344 (952) 975-0400. If so desired, memorials can be sent to The National Kidney Foundation, Auburn Manor or to the Evans' Scholars. A life celebration will be held at Hazeltine in September.
