Ruth Mandery

Mandery, Ruth Sandgren age 84, of Edina, passed away surrounded by her family from complications associated with Alzheimer's. Ruth was born in Winnipeg, Canada, to Ames and Olga Sandgren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother John, her brother-in-law Keith Olson and her niece, Susan Bangerter. Surviving her are her loving husband of 58 years, C. Marvin "Bud" Mandery; daughters, JoEllen (Angel) Sanchez, Jeri (Stan) Herman, Janelle Mandery and Julie Mandery; sister, Alice (Alfred) Olson-Byron; grandson, Nicolas Sanchez-Mandery and step-grandchildren, Mike Herman, Dan Herman and Erica (Eddie) Valdez; several nieces, nephews, cousins (including five from Canada) and a host of other relatives and friends. Ruth was a registered nurse, having graduated in 1946 from U.S. Cadet Nurses Corps program at Deaconess Hospital and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. She worked as an RN at the V.A. Hospitals in both Fargo, ND and Minneapolis, MN and at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, CO. Shortly after her marriage, she became a full-time homemaker, dedicating herself to her family. She was an exceptional hostess and cook and volunteered in numerous community activities, with the Woman's Club of Minneapolis and the Peace Garden at Lake Harriet being among her favorites. Ruth had a passionate interest in music. She was an accomplished pianist and singer who participated in several choral groups. She also attended Metropolitan Opera productions for 33 years and along with her husband was a member of several dance clubs. Ruth loved to travel and visited destinations in the U.S., Europe, Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean. But, she was always happy to return to Minnesota. A very special thanks to the exceptional care staff at Sunrise of Edina, as well as the care from the Fairview Hospice group. A memorial service will be held at Lake Harriet United Methodist Church, 4901 Chowen Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55410 on Monday, October 26th at 11:00 AM, with visitation starting at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, donations may be made to the Godfrey House Project at the Woman's Club of Minneapolis, 410 Oak Grove Street, Minneapolis, MN 55403, the Music Scholarship Fund at Lake Harriet United Methodist Church or the donor's choice.
